A heated dispute between two men escalated when one drew a gun and shot the other in a residential area in Phetchaburi province, leaving the victim with serious injuries. The incident occurred on the morning of March 16, when the victim, a 45-year-old monk’s helper, was shot twice by the assailant, identified as 56-year-old Chaiwat Boonyong.

The victim, Phan Chuen, was shot once in the left arm and once in the abdomen. Authorities found two spent casings from a 9mm Glock automatic handgun at the scene. The shooter fled into his home after the attack, prompting a standoff with police officers. After over half an hour of negotiation, Boonyong surrendered and was taken into custody.

According to witnesses, the two men had been arguing earlier that day. Neighbours reported that the altercation had begun when the victim, a well-known figure in the local Buddhist community, had asked the shooter to lower the volume of his loud drinking sessions, as it was disturbing elderly residents. The situation appeared to have been simmering for some time, with earlier threats of violence and gunshots fired in the vicinity.

One witness, 32-year-old Nat, explained that the victim had attempted to de-escalate the situation after the police intervened, but shortly after, the shooter returned and shot the victim. The victim, who was known for his kindness, would often share food with the poor after his daily alms rounds.

The police investigation suggests that the shooter and the victim had a long-standing feud, with the shooter previously firing a warning shot at a pile of dirt as a threat. Despite attempts to smooth over the tensions, the violence ultimately culminated in a serious attack.

Chaiwat Boonyong now faces attempted murder charges, and police are gathering further witness testimony as part of their ongoing investigation.

Authorities have pledged to press charges and bring the shooter to justice in accordance with the law.
