Van Collides with Pickup Truck Carrying Workers, 8 Injured, 1 Seriously

A van collided with the rear of a pickup truck transporting workers, causing the truck to spin out of control and crash into a six-wheeled truck. Workers were thrown from the vehicle, leaving 8 people injured, with one in serious condition. The van, which fled the scene, was later found nearly two kilometres away, with the driver claiming brake failure rather than attempting to escape.

 

At approximately 08:00 on March 18, the Pureyeangtai Rescue Centre in Sriracha, Chonburi, received reports of a serious accident on the motorway at kilometre 92-700, heading towards Pattaya, in Bang Phra Subdistrict, Sriracha District. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene, where they found a bronze Toyota pickup truck with a metal cage, registered to Chonburi, stopped in the middle of the road. The truck had sustained damage to both the front and rear.

 

 

Around the truck, injured workers were scattered across the road, with local bystanders assisting them to the side. Upon inspection, it was discovered that six Cambodian workers, along with two Thai individuals, were injured. 

 

A nearby six-wheeled truck was also damaged in the incident, with the driver, 54-year-old Mr. Sutat uninjured. However, the van that caused the crash did not stop, continuing to drive away from the scene.

 

Rescue workers provided first aid, with the Cambodian workers suffering cuts, bruises, and head injuries, as well as fractures. The man seated at the back of the pickup was found unconscious, foaming at the mouth, and in serious condition. He was rushed to hospital for emergency care. The two Thai individuals in the front of the pickup truck sustained head injuries.

 

A dashcam from a vehicle following the incident revealed that the van was travelling in the far-right lane , lane 4, while the pickup truck was in lane 3. As the van approached, it swerved left to undertake, clipping the rear of the pickup truck. The impact caused the pickup to spin out of control, crashing into the six-wheeled truck in lane 1. The workers were ejected from the pickup, rolling across the road, though fortunately avoiding further collisions with the six-wheeled truck or any following vehicles. The van continued without stopping.

 

The van was later found nearly two kilometres away at the Nong Yai Buu Bridge. The driver, 60-year-old Mr. Siripob, was identified as the person responsible for the crash. The front of his blue and yellow Toyota van had sustained significant damage.

 

Mr. Siripob explained that he had been returning from Suvarnabhumi Airport after dropping off a passenger when he encountered a vehicle blocking his path. He swerved into the next lane and collided with the pickup truck. Despite his attempts to brake, he claimed the van’s brakes failed, causing him to lose control and the vehicle to roll forward. He confirmed that he did not attempt to flee the scene but was unable to stop the van due to a brake malfunction, even after trying the handbrake.

That has to be the lamest excuse to date this year.

It does not need two kilometers for a van to roll to a stop.
