Check out the 'Freedom Map' and click on any country and read the annual report.

You may just learn something.

Just because the politics of the day may be left-leaning does not mean they are socialist countries.   That is not true.   The majority of countries in SA have democracy and so doe

^^ Lack of law enforcement looks a lot like freedom, but it isn't really the same.

I don't think Freedom House are considering these issues when writing their annual reports.

If you really want to know what they are focused on, then go ahead and read the full report on Thailand for yourself...

Day to day issues. I can smoke pot, buy pharma drugs then get beer from 7/11 then drive drunk. How is that not freedom?

Sorry, Harrisfan, but I don't think we are on the same page.

Let's just agree to disagree.

Indeed.

thailand gets 34/100 freedom score, but based on what criteria?

seems like a silly baseless score to me.

If 'freedom' is based on freedom of speech, then IMHO the vast majority of civilians would not consider that a useful freedom. Perhaps if you are some political activist, but again IMHO I think most people just want to get on with their lives without government interference (ie nanny state).

Most western people view free speech as a fundamental human right...

What planet are you on, Simon?

I'd give it 90/100. West about 50.

Free speech vs freedom of action. I prefer free action. West is now jailing free speakers as well.

Meaningless!  Who gives a flying <deleted> about free speech?

I'd rather live somewhere with decent schools, hospitals etc, and where I can get on with my life without the state poking its nose in....

Most people don't give a damn about free speech, (unless you're into politics).  Give me China or Laos any day over the UK/USA/Australia. (excluding the crap hospitals in Laos!!)

Free speech is only important when you are involved in politics.  I have zero interest in politics (because ALL politicians are corrupt).  I have learnt to look after myself and those I love.  Everyone else can go <deleted> themselves 🙂
