29-year-old Mr Kazim

I doubt Uganda even has an embassy or any sort of repatriation system here.

It's going to be a long hot 50 years for this guy.

Prison must be awful from March-May when it gets so hot. His friends probably told him he'd have no problems smuggling the drugs and he believed them. Who will tell his family where he is, I wonder?

Life ruined for $1000

A naive child. At 29 years old you'd expect him to know better. Perhaps he has learning difficulties or some other kind of condition that leads to being easily duped.

Upon investigation, Mr Kazim was found in a hotel in Hat Yai, arousing suspicion by carrying a large suitcase lacking an entry stamp in his passport.

So he crossed at a leaky border?

He crossed in Narathiwat. I live in the province, and it's not exactly hard to cross the river separating Thailand and Malaysia. In fact, until recently locals used to do that semi-legally every day. Nowadays, because of concerns of terrorism, the Thai side tries to enforce border security much more strictly. But where there's a will, there's a way. The border is over 100 km long and easily passable.

Quite a lot of Ugandan criminals in the Thai news recently. :whistling:

I had a few business dealings with a couple of companies in Uganda. Untrustworthy would be putting it mildly.

Thank you for sharing your personal experience.

While it is often regarded "Africa's fastest growing economy" though.
