A deeply disturbing incident emerged this Songkran Festival in Bangkok, as a woman gave birth on the roadside, only to abandon her newborn before returning to the festivities with friends. The incident, occurring on April 14 near Rotsarin Village in Bangkok’s Don Mueang district, was reported by the Facebook news page เจ๊ม้อย v+ (Jmoi v+), highlighting the dire circumstances surrounding this tragedy.

The mother, identified as 27-year-old Piyathida, was initially seen participating in water celebrations near where the infant was discovered. Despite visible blood and inquiries from onlookers, she denied being the mother, attributing her bleeding to menstruation. However, her condition worsened, and she ultimately confessed, leading to her hospitalisation at Prachathipat Hospital due to severe blood loss.

CCTV footage from the scene revealed Piyathida delivering the baby near a parked car, tearing the placenta and leaving nonchalantly. Although the infant was alive upon discovery, efforts by rescue workers to revive the child through CPR tragically failed.

Phuwadon Aoonpho, Superintendent of Don Mueang Police Station, informed Channel 7 of Piyathida's admission to being the child's mother but claimed she could not recall the father’s identity. Notably, Piyathida, under the influence of alcohol during police questioning, has two other children from prior marriages, both in the care of her ex-husbands' families.

The police superintendent confirmed that Piyathida will face legal repercussions for her actions, pending further questioning post-recovery. The harrowing incident has sparked public outcry and intensified scrutiny into her motives and circumstances.

Adding to the controversy, Piyathida’s friend, identified as 20-year-old Am, publicly denounced her actions and terminated their friendship. Am, who once shared a residence with Piyathida, expressed disbelief over the cruel behaviour, noting their interactions had dwindled until the festival invitation. Despite suspecting a pregnancy, Am accepted Piyathida's explanation of weight gain.

Am further disclosed that Piyathida is estranged from her family, with her mother living abroad and providing financial support. The abandonment, coupled with previous behavioural issues, has left Piyathida isolated from familial ties and support networks.

This deeply unsettling event highlights the urgent need for societal and familial support systems to address issues of mental health, substance abuse, and socio-economic distress. As the investigation continues, it stands as a somber reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by individuals on the fringes of societal norms, reported The Thaiger.
