China has warned it will hit back at countries that make deals with the US that hurt Beijing's interests, as the trade war between the world's two biggest economies threatens to drag in other nations.

 

The comments come after reports that the US plans to pressure governments to restrict trade with China in exchange for exemptions to US tariffs.

The Trump administration has started talks with trading partners over tariffs, with a Japanese delegation visiting Washington last week and South Korea is set to start negotiations this week.

Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has imposed hefty taxes on Chinese imports, while other countries have also been hit with levies on their goods.

"Appeasement cannot bring peace, and compromise cannot earn one respect," a Chinese Commerce Ministry spokesperson said, external.

"China firmly opposes any party reaching a deal at the expense of China's interests. If this happens, China will never accept it and will resolutely take countermeasures".

China's manufacturing output is double that of the USA. In terms of domestic demand, the Chinese middle class is bigger than the entire US population.

 

Approximately 70% of economies in the world trade more with China than America.

 

In terms of GDP, the US is bigger. In terms of Purchasing Power Parity ( PPP) China is bigger.

 

I am Australian. China does not apply tariffs to Australia. The US does, despite having a positive trade balance with Australia.

 

I would like an American to explain why we should continue to ally ourselves with the USA, because we certainly are not being treated as one.

Trump really expected China to panic. But the Chinese behaved very self-confidently. What was America's miscalculation in the trade war? In that China understands that this whole show about the US no longer supporting Ukraine is just an attempt to transform a proxy war (US->ProxyUkraine->Russia) into a double proxy war (US->ProxyEU->ProxyUkraine->Russia) without changing the essence of what is happening. And this means that the slightest diversion of US forces from Ukraine to China will mean an immediate restoration of the Soviet Union and a strong geopolitical defeat for the US. Therefore, China is behaving very brazenly, understanding that the US will not be able to respond.

5-10 years ago, in the same situation, China would have simply silently agreed to the US conditions. And that would be the end of the trade war.

Inviting them in would save lives but take all freedoms from you.

There is this strange notion that because the US is buying and China is selling, that puts the US in a stronger position. Because of Chinese dominance in manufacturiing there isn't anywhere else to go for a lot of the stuff that China makes. Not just finished products but intermediate inputs as well.

Of course China is in a weaker position because China hardly imports any US products, so its retaliation is  much less significant than America's tariffs. 

 

In short, the US can hurt the Chinese a lot more than China can hurt Americans.

 

The Chinese know this. That's why they are in a much weaker position to negotiate and reticent to come to the table. They know they will be savaged in negotiations. Because they don't have the cards.

You have entirely missed the point. You believe that in this situation it's the buyer who holds the advantage. But that only works in a marketplace where the seller has competitors. Now it's true that individual Chinese manufacturers do have competitors. But it's other Chinese manufacturers. So when that whole extraordinary industrial ecosystem is blackballed, it's not the Chinese who will suffer the most. After all, the American share of their exports is less than 14 percent. But where are the Americans going to find these products?

China exports to the US accounts for about 14% of their total exports. Other countries are also importing less from the US because Trump is bullying them, so they have to get their imports elsewhere. Maybe China?

In short, Trump is isolating the US from the rest of the world, and makes the US population suffer.

For now his maga crowd has only see figures mentioned, but soon they will experience the effects of the tariffs. Let's see how long they stay happy

That's not the most relevant issue. The most relevant issue is that China is about to lose 400 billion USD worth of market share. Whereas America is not losing very much at all from Chinese tariffs.

 

As Germany showed when it replaced 94 per cent of Russian oil imports with alternative suppliers from Canada to Norway, it is always possible to find alternative suppliers. Including for rare earths, btw, which can be recycled.

 

Clearly it is China that will suffer the most, 400 billion USD is not chump change to an economy that is already in trouble.
