Given the recent death of the supreme pontiff I thought it might be appropriate to post a link to a video that helps explain the true, profound nature of Roman Catholicism.

No-one writes such clever lyrics these days, shame.

My mom, rest her soul, was a Catholic.

She had lost her first daughter at a young age. Traumatized her for life.

She needed something to believe in.

And she maybe wasn't intellectual enough to search for any alternatives.

But even people who are intellectual and curious-minded enough to seek out alternatives to Catholicism, where does that usually lead them? To some other questionable belief system? To atheism? Belief in nothing?

I didn't watch the OP. I bet he's an atheist. Atheists love to knock religions, but they got nothing better.

For some people, it served a purpose and they didn't harm anyone while following this religion.

I was highly critical of Catholicism growing up, but then realized that some people need it and it serves a purpose.

I have great respect for Catholicism. Of the major religiions, Catholicisim, Islam or Buddhism, which one is the best one though?

Hard call to make.

Buddhism, if you consider it a religion and not just a philosophy. Too much harmful baggage with the others.

Do you prefer the big bang story from an imaginary nothing?

There is a lot of evidence for the big bang and evolution. There is none for sky fairies.

How do you know that Apollo is not a god? Just repeat the process one more time.

The only religion focused around a non-magical being.

That was my judgement thus far too, Buddhism just seems more logical and akin to philosophy. Though of course it also has its baggage, with Maras and angels and such.

Though four wives from Islam seems thoroughly sensible.

And absolution of sin by  compassionate God, also very tempting.

The numinous. I remember just before he died Christopher Hitchins was asked, if he could change one thing in world what would it be. His answer was to do away with the numinous.

True religion should bring joy, explain strange things and forgive our stupid acts.

The only one fits is Hare-Krishna.

The Tao is probably all you need, or the I Ching less the divinition. But some humans do like their gods. It's easy .......and lazy minded.

I do like Taoism, basically Zen Buddhism. But the I-Ching was a massive let down, basically unreadable.

Religious people particularly the non denominational type eg Hare Krishna,Muslim etc are such beautiful religions.

As a supervisor in my workplace,I had a team member complain to me one night that his work partner Ali was leaving the floor mopping to pray and not doing the mopping

I immediately told him that it's beautiful to pray and he should finish the floor mopping on Ali's behalf whilst he prays !

I know what you mean. It can come across as a bit of a self-help book, suffering from nuances that are missing in literal translations from the mandarin. Those in the know say that it's better if you read it in the original Chinese.

And a lot of it is dependant on cleromancy which is alien to the western mind.

What are you talking about?

Creation of the universe?

That is not the only issue religion concerns itself with.

I think that must be the case, I read the German translation. Clearly I need to learn Chinese. I guess the weekend is not over.

They are all "magical" according to their believers!

there is a difference between feeling magical and claiming actual magic

Who says it came from nothing?

Well, besides folks that simplify big bang cosmology to that simple strawman, so they can by default claim their magic dude in the sky poofed it into existance......from nothing.

Given that an estimated 4.8 million children under the age of five died globally in 2023......I would suggest the pontiff takes a big step and.......you know the rest.

I agree with you except that there is no evidence for there being nothing 1 second before the bang. Everything from nothing? That's a belief.

Atheism is a belief system, with everything it entails in terms of dogma and hostility towards non-believers (in fact, I have often found atheists to have very little tolerance towards those who don't share their belief).
