America has emerged....as an international laughingstock

But they do raise them, the EU lowered barriers internally, but raised tariffs against China.

They don't. The US has the biggest bond market in the world. Both private and government.

https://www.weforum.org/stories/2023/04/ranked-the-largest-bond-markets-in-the-world/

As the focus fades from ultra-cheap prodcuts, but consumers in places like the US are used to paying higher prices, and quality becomes more important, the hunger wages in Asia would lose their rationale.

YOu still haven't explained this comment of yours:

" Well, consumers in the US would not get the opportunity to pay lower prices, US made products will be more expensive, and cheaper imports will be impaired with tariffs, therefore more expensive still.

The US consumer, whether he likes it or not, will have to pay higher prices."

Are you predicting an end to representational democracy in the USA?

Trump is a circus clown. Few expected this level of chaos and such a slide in consumer confidence and poll approval numbers.

Just a few of the insane things this goon has done already.

He turned a legitimate federal employee designation into a loophole. By giving senior officials such as Elon Musk the title “special government employee,” Mr. Trump avoided requirements that they publicly disclose their financial holdings and divest any that present conflicts before taking jobs in the administration.

He ended bans that stopped executive branch employees from accepting gifts from lobbyists or seeking lobbying jobs themselves for at least two years.

He loosened the enforcement of laws that curb foreign lobbying and bribery.

He dismissed the head of the office that polices conflicts of interest among senior officials.

He jettisoned the head of the office that, among other things, protects whistle-blowers and ensures political neutrality in federal workplaces.

He purged nearly 20 nonpartisan inspectors general who were entrusted with rooting out corruption within the government.

As Mr. Musk’s political activities started to repel many potential customers of Tesla, his electric vehicle company, Mr. Trump lined Tesla vehicles up on the White House driveway and extolled their benefits. Then Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick urged Fox News viewers to buy Tesla shares.

DOGE nearly halved the team at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that regulates autonomous vehicles. The agency has been investigating whether Tesla’s self-driving technology played a role in the death of a pedestrian in Arizona.

As Trump’s trade war locks the world’s two largest economies on a collision course, America’s unnerved allies and partners are cozying up with China to hedge their bets. It comes as Trump’s trade push upends a decade of American foreign policy — including his own from his first term — toward rallying the rest of the world to join the United States against China. And it threatens to hand Beijing more leverage in any eventual dialogue with the U.S. administration.

Hal Brands, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute in Washington, said China will “try to exploit Trump’s abrasive behavior to make inroads with U.S. allies and countries in the Global South.”

Some scholars say Beijing is already gaining. “People lost the confidence, or even trust, for the United States, particularly for Donald Trump in the U.S. Not for China,” said Li Cheng, professor of political science at the University of Hong Kong. “So in that regard, China gains in the geopolitical landscape.”

In the latest Ipsos poll, for the first time, more people globally now say China has a positive impact on the world than the United States. The pollster cited the broad backlash to Trump’s tariffs.

With Trump saying that countries are “kissing my ass” to negotiate trade deals on his terms or risk stiff import taxes, Beijing is reaching out to countries far and near. It portrays itself as a stabilizing force and a predictable trading partner, both to cushion the impact from Trump’s tariffs and to forge stronger trade ties outside of the U.S. market.

“America and China are now locked in a fierce contest for global supremacy,” Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said in an April 16 speech. “Both powers claim they do not wish to force countries to choose sides. But in reality, each seeks to draw others closer into their respective orbits.”

It’s all a sorry and sordid picture, a president who had already set a new standard for egregious and potentially illegal behavior hitting new lows with metronomic regularity.

Trumps tax cuts are conservatively estimated to cost the USA about $700 billion per year. And the lower your income is, the greater the burden due to tariffs.

Okay, so bargain basement journo nonsense. He claims because Powell wasn't fired and a short reprieve was given on tariffs Trump "rowed" back". Which is of course not true.

Both the pressure on Powell and the tariffs were to achieve specific goals, that look likely to be achieved.

Tell me which direction to look please.

I'm just not seeing it.

Unless of course the goal is global chaos.

The first goal is to entice foreign nations to approach the US to negotiate trade deals. Over 100 have approached the US government. Success.

The second goal is to put the fear of God into Powell so he lowers interest rates more quickly. We'll find out in June.

No, the goals were to incentivize Powell to lower interest rates earlier than he would usually do, and to incentivize nations to offer the US a new deal in trade. That's right cammo , you've got to remember that Trump is a very experienced deal maker. He lays his cards on the table and makes his first offer and then waits for the counter offers The first offer never seals the deal. You can't go from a broke, 4 time bankrupt casino owner to a 2 time president of the USA unless you know how to negotiate to get youself out of the sh*t.  Just relax everybody and wait and  he's only had 100 days and you might get a pleasant surprise.

Absolutely, the progress he has made already is astounding and the trade war is only starting.

Yep every country in the world NEEDS to deal with the USA because it has the largest economy so give them time and they will all run back to Trump and fall in line becacause they can't afford not to....even China whose economy is in big trouble at the moment.

It is difficult to switch suppliers in the very short term, so to that extent it could be argued that the rest of the world NEEDS the US. Obviously, this dependency works the other way as well. (Incidentally, this short term dependency also explains why US tariff revenue is at record levels). However, outside of this very short time-scale it is a different story: Other nations will WANT to deal with the US but very few will NEED to.

On the (US) export side, substitutes for most US goods will be available elsewhere; other things being equal, there shouldn't be any major problems with capacity as goods which were originally destined for the US market can be diverted. All that Trump's tariffs will succeed in doing is reducing the demand for US goods and financially injuring the US producer and ultimately the US consumer.

As far as (overseas) exports to the US are concerned; yes, nations will want to deal with the US but not at any price: No deal is better than a bad deal. I suspect that Trump will wrestle a few concessions from nations and claim a great victory, when in reality nothing much will have changed. I doubt very much that there will be a fundamental reordering of the structure of world trade as some posters suggest.

Going off on a slight tangent. I am still baffled why Trump believes that relocating cheap textile manufacturing from the likes of Bangladesh and Vietnam - and cheap electrical manufacturing from China - to the US is a good idea. Are these the types of low-paid jobs which the average American worker wants to fill? Even in the unlikely event that is the case, these jobs are likely to very temporary, as capital innovation will probably soon render human labour mostly redundant in these types of industries.

Sure, he got the 400 plus million during the course of his life later, but well, 5100 million. Come on!

You must be getting dizzy now after all the verbal gymnastics you’ve gone through in defending your cult leader and attempting to convince people that he’s a great businessman who had just a modest leg up (and a portfolio of New York real estate) to embark on his career of bankrupting companies, stiffing contractors and students……
