no yearly test until they are 7yrs old.

Has that been changed to 7 years Ralf? I thought it was ten years and then, only required if the vehicle is being sold to a new owner. That used to be the case at least.

Hiya folks, ive seen heaps of pickup trucks spewing those black smokes from their exhaust,

is there some malfunction with their engine for this occurr?

ive seen like motobikes behind these trucks and get blasted with black fumes possibly cause some lung cancer and stuff?

im sure breathing those smokes or gettign in to ur eyes and clothese aint good for health

Worn injectors is a common problem causing diesel engines to smoke.

Dirty/clogged fuel injectors are the most likely cause. Yes, diesel particulates can increase the risk of lung cancer.

The difference between Thailand and Malaysia is obvious, I have never seen a bus, truck or car blowing smoke there. For all I know, there are death squads operating that drag errant drivers out of their vehicles, and execute them on the spot.

A great idea if that could be introduced here Lacessit. But let's let the death squad punish all of the other idiocy on the roads as well.

There are still plenty of smoke belchers in Malaysia but I see them mostly outside of the cities. The Police there do seem to do a much more thorough job than the BiB here

I would recommend the motorcycle to overtake the truck.

I've heard it's deliberate because they think the smoke looks cool.  I'm not sure about adding power.

They're getting a concentrated dose, but you're getting a pretty good amount whenever you're outside without a mask on.

What kind of mask?

Most of the vehicles pumping out black smoke are way over 7 years old.

Possibly, if it is an old worn out vehicle.

Newer vehicles, Diesel tuners dump more fuel in to make more power, the black smoke is unburnt combustion.

It is after 7 years, every year in order to get tax disc.

The check usually consists of checking the VIN number, kicking the tyres, looking for smoke, or even a probe up the pipe?, sound the horn, drive round and see the brakes work..that's it.

Ok thanks. I guess since I haven't had a vehicle for longer than 7 years from new, I didn't know what is suppossed to happen. There is one coming up soon though.

Really?

But good news. These old stinky vehicles will be removed after certain years.

Also you can report them.

If it is unburnt it is by definition not combustion. It's basically too much fuel pumped into the engine that it can't burn. Without the combustion it can't produce extra power , it's simply wasted fuel.

Got behind one of these modified pickups recently at a traffic light.  When the driver took off, the smoke was so thick it turned my automatic windshield wipers on.  I had to back way off until the thick smoke thinned out some.

It demonstrates a horrific level of disrespect for the public and a tremendous level of low self esteem. Many times it is due to dirty oil in a diesel vehicle. The perpetrators would rather spend 300 baht on durian than change their oil. Zero consciousness. Sad and dispicable behavior. And another reason why diesel vehicles should be banned. They don't belong in the 21st century.

I'm a cyclist in Thailand and I get blasted with smoke in the face all too often (twice today actually!) and the worst is when you're going up a mountain going slow and breathing heavy.

Usually it's just people that can't afford to have a truck but need it for work and are hauling heavy things. These things are so run down it doesn't surprise me.

The ones that get me are all the SUVs that don't even look that old yet are spewing smoke. Of course this is illegal they like everything else they simply do not enforce it. If you can afford that SUV you should be able to maintain it or be taken off the road out of respect for the rest of us.

Most, not all, problems with heavy exhaust are usually problems with unregulated air either on the combustion/turbo side (old cracked hoses to/from the turbo) or an air leak on the exhaust side.  A new mass airflow switch or air cleaner can help a lot.  When I lived in Phuket my diesel suv was older than seven years so I had to do the annual check to renew the registration.  Without fail when the exhaust was checked the probe was lined up about a meter to one side so as to be completely clear of the exhaust stream.  The underlying problem is that those Thai people who need vehicles as part of their work don't have the extra cash to stay on top of such things.  The government frequently announces crackdowns but I never saw anything concrete happening.
