Alcatraz was closed years and years ago and for good reason. It was proved to be ineffective and expensive as a prison.

True. Before closing, some inmates escaped by scraping a hole through the concrete cell wall with spoons. The salty sea air/fog has taken it's toll on the place. The cost of transporting everything to the island prison by boat is also very expensive.  It does have an amazing 360 degree view of the San Francisco bay though. 

There are now many tourists visiting every day.

 

I dont think it a good idea for long term prisoners and tourists to mix.
