Let's hope he comes out strongly against the brutal kidnapping & rape  of Jews and the killing of their children by palestinians, Hamas & Hezbollah.

Why would he come out against self-defence?

Doesn't even make sense.

Of course, how could one not side with the oppressed, whose land is stolen mercilessly. When given the choice between a government that has murdering children as official state policy and the victims of landtheft, only a heartless monster or a moron would opt for the childkillers.

I see you are a victim of Hamas propaganda. LOL.. Believe what you want.

You are referring to palestinians- hamas & Hezbollah. They exist simply exterminate all jews. That is basis of the palestinian belief system.  I have spent 30 years in the middle east including the time the palestinian were evicted from Kuwait for siding with the Iraqi invaders.

He is Peruvian !

American and Peruvian.

That definitely helped his case.

There is a sort of warm and fuzzy continuation from Francis with him.

Not exactly the same of course but a lot of people thought there might be a reaction towards a more right wingy type.

I thought that in certain circles dual citizenship was frowned upon?

The point is by having such an international type American that spent so much of his career in Peru, it softened the idea of the first American pope which is an idea with a lot of traditional opposition. I'm sure most assumed there would be a first Asian and first African pope before the first American. But with this particular American you get North and South. Also of course he speaks Latin, Spanish, and Italian as well as English.

You might have a point, its probably not a good idea for a Pope to remind the rightwing christofascists that have control of the GOP of what it is Jesus actually said.

Great term, "christofascists". They're the ones who screamed like banshees when the former pope pointed out that according to the teachings of Jesus they're heading straight to hell.

Like that entity calling itself Marjory Taylor Greene. Vile.

When he does, and his past record suggests he probably will, then the meltdown on US social media, already significant, will be spectacular - truly MAGA!

Of course, what many dismiss as "progressive" others (myself included) regard as reflecting the teachings of Christ.

Yes, exactly. For the MAGA base the teachings of Jesus are considered "leftist". Imagine that!😂

But as leader of the church he has to leadership and direction. To do so without political comment not feasible.

And, of course, we need to consider his freedom of speech, what with it being such a hot topic these days.

Who has more freedom of speech.   Someone who lives in Europe?  Or someone who lives in the USA?

What did Jesus actually say?

Although I am not Catholic, I certainly would prefer a pope who's views were aligned to my own, much as you would yours, I assume.

Would you be critical of him if he turned up on the balcony of St Peter's wearing a maga hat?

Are you left wing progressive?

Well I am European and don't feel stifled. I can't comment on how Americans feel.

The pope is the epitome of politics. He invented politics when the Catholic Church was the most powerful institution in the world.

Really?

He's done a lot in a few days.

He's more effective than Trump on immigration. And that's not easy.

I see Laura Loomer has gone into an epic rant - apparently Pope Leo is a "Marxist"!

If he he does continue to criticise I should imagine Trump will be in (to use a quasi biblical expression) his seventh heaven. There is nothing, absolutely nothing, that he would like more than being able to portray himself as the victim of a conspiracy by "nasty people"!

Wow, I'm absolutely CHOCKED that you can't back up your statement. Don't worry, we all knew you couldn't so you can stop back-pedaling now, mate!😄
