At least potent view for the sunset! As we would say in Norwegian «A real Troll Kuk» Good omen for the night coming

A bit of a story and some photos I hope you like. 47 years ago I arrived at Chaweng Beach Samui in the back of an ice truck at about 6am after taking the night boat over. There were only 3 bungalows on Chaweng then. First bungalows was #1 but they only have a restaurant in the corner of Chaweng Yai, there bungalows are on Chaweng Noi. Then Long Beach at #2 the far end of Chaweng, up near where the nightlife area is now. I chose Chaweng Guest house the best spot on the beach. 30 baht a night bungalows on the beach. The owners son was only 13 and the only one in the family that could speak English, he loved meeting travelers and talking to them. I got to meet him as he worked in the restaurant at night. After a couple of weeks we were friends.

From that time on we have been close. Chaweng Guest house is now Samui Paradise, a beautiful real Thai style resort still family owned. In addition they own Princess Paradise on Koh Phangan.

just two weeks we got a call inviting us down for his 60th birthday. Over the years he has been developing 5 rai of mountain jungle into the beginnings of a Wat. It is now Ariyawongsawan forest meditation center. He finally completed the Monks bungalows 5 of them and wanted to Thamboon, make merit for his birthday. So down we came here are a few shots just to let you see Thai life can be meaningful and fun at the same time.

Photos include Chaweng beach, view from our bungalow to the beach, sunrise on Chaweng and Phangan, the monks quarters, and the donator his family with my wife and two other close friends.

What a wonderful post. I am a Samui visitor (and lived there for a few years on and off) for 27 years. Not a patch on your goodself.

I still remember when I first came. Amari Chaweng as was on a package holiday but gravitated towards Lamai on that first visit and that has been my 'go to' ever since. I now spend time in CM and Saraburi with the odd beach break at Jomtien also but still manage to get to Lamai for 2 or 3 weeks a couple of times every year.

I am still good friends with the 4 sisters who own a very large chunk of Lamai real estate between them. Met them all on my very first trip and have remained close ever since.

I like picture topics. Rainbow over Siem Reap

What a great post! I really enjoyed it and it's fantastic that you've kept in touch, Thai people are just the best.

I was first in Samui 30 years ago and still love it today.

Gotta love low season, what a pleasant change from Isaan, and makes it worth living a bit remote when you getting the feeling of or experience new small Paradises once and awhile.

One thing I miss most while living in Isaan is walking barefoot on the beach early in the morning.

It is the best possible start to the day, quiet sand, fresh air, the sound of the sea

PXL_20260512_233307799.MP.jpg

Could not agree more. Spent the last week doing it quite early. Setting out as I always do at 6:40. But barefoot no music or podcasts. Just the sound of the waves.

Why are you asking?

Is it because that is the standard you are used to? 😆

I'll be reporting every off topic reply. If you 2 can't ignore each other, place take your handbag to another thread and ruin that one.

Long beach walks are great. I'm going to look for the longest.

Why not, view with dessert ...

When you have taken fresh air for granted your whole life, this is considered a perfect day in Thailand.

Ban Krut is 9 km, maybe more if low tide gets you pass the one inlet.
