In a strategic move to boost Thailand's status as a wellness tourism hotspot, the Budget Bureau is committing 509 million baht from its 2026 revenue to develop the nation's border provinces into thriving medical hubs.

Announced by Deputy Health Spokesman Jirapong Songwatcharaporn on Tuesday, this initiative forms a key part of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra's vision to establish Thailand as a global health centre.

This plan includes an array of services from wellness spas to traditional Thai medicine, all aimed at generating over 690 billion baht in annual revenue.

The Border Medical Hubs Programme, a major highlight of this initiative, seeks to upgrade hospitals in strategic locations like Kanchanaburi, Sa Kaeo, and Tak to reduce health disparities and improve accessibility to quality medical treatment.

Each province will house specialised centres, including a cancer centre in Kanchanaburi allocated 75.9 million baht and a heart centre in Sakon Nakhon with funding of 26.3 million baht. These new hubs are expected to lower travel strain for patients and foster health tourism.

Further efforts to boost the wellness industry include establishing the Public Health Economic Policy Office, promoting traditional Thai wisdom and herbal medicine, and supporting health-related tourism initiatives.

These comprehensive strategies aim to position Thailand as a preferred destination for medical tourism, thereby generating significant economic benefits and ensuring broader access to healthcare services for the local population.

By upgrading healthcare facilities and promoting specialised medical treatments in border areas, the programme is anticipated to both uplift local economies and enhance health equity across the region.

well, it may not be the best strategy at the moment, but if we look at the history of Thailand overall i.e. having incredibly grands schemes being proposed lagering around for once or years, and never appearing to be done... maybe that’s the secret to Thailand being the only uncolonized nation in the world and one of the most popular tourist countries too.

I would be in anyone’s favor if you could express your achieved and knowing opinion on this matter.
