A distressing incident unfolded in Mueang Dok Khamtai district, Phayao province, as over 100 residents were hospitalised with severe symptoms of vomiting and diarrhoea. The mass illness followed the consumption of red pork rice at a local funeral on June 15, with emergency services called for several attendees as their conditions worsened.

The red pork rice was part of approximately 700 meal boxes prepared by the funeral hosts and distributed to attendees. Within two hours of eating, a significant number of people began experiencing symptoms like dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea, necessitating immediate medical attention for some due to the severity of their symptoms.

Health officials have attributed the outbreak to potential bacterial contamination or spoilage linked to the prevailing heatwave, which can exacerbate food spoilage. They have emphasised the need for heightened vigilance in food preparation and storage during the summer months, urging residents to be particularly cautious to prevent similar events.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with foodborne illnesses, particularly in hot weather, and underscores the importance of maintaining proper food safety practices. Officials continue to investigate the exact cause of the food poisoning to prevent future occurrences and reassure the affected community.
