Transport Bangkok to Revamp Public Transit with Electric Buses

Bangkok is set to transform its public transport system with the introduction of electric buses, leaving behind its old diesel fleet. The Cabinet has approved a 15.35 billion baht plan, spearheaded by the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA), to lease electric vehicles over the next seven years.

 

This significant move shifts the focus from the outdated 2012 plan to procure 3,183 natural gas vehicles, a decision highlighted by Deputy Government Spokesperson Anukool Pruksanusak. "This new plan reflects a shift toward clean energy and long-term sustainability for public transport in Bangkok," said Anukool.

 

The plan allocates 10.1 billion baht for leasing the buses, 3.2 billion baht for maintenance, and 967 million baht for charging stations. Initial funding of 368.4 million baht will be provided from the current fiscal year’s budget, with additional funds distributed between 2026 and 2031.

 

The BMTA aims to retire 1,520 old diesel buses, replacing them with an eco-friendly fleet to promote cleaner commuting. Beyond environmental benefits, the programme is projected to generate 52.65 billion baht in revenue over seven years, through fares and advertising, with an expected profit of 19.85 billion baht.

 

This initiative promises to improve the daily commute for Bangkok’s citizens, addressing longstanding issues with smoke-belching, breakdown-prone vehicles. Officials anticipate smoother rides, enhanced air quality, and a revitalised image for public transport in the city.

 

While it’s not yet clear when these electric buses will start operating, the plan's approval marks a significant leap forward. Whether the ambitious forecasts will be met, and real improvements realised, remains to be seen, but Bangkok is making a decisive move towards an electric future.

So there's a 13-year-old plan which is now being abandoned for a brand new plan all luvly & shiny. 

 

I've just turned 76 and I'm wondering if I'll see the new elec-tricks before I'm 86.
