Is paying the bar to take a girl out of the bar justified? Or just a scam?

I have a “drinking friend” who lives in the UK who has found “true love” in the bar.

He is 58, divorced and seems fairly well off.

She is damn hot, 26 from Burirum province. Friendly, speaks good English, 8 year old daughter lives in Burirum.

He plans to come to Thailand 2-3 times per year.
She claims to have about 40,000 in debts with crazy interest which is why she is working the bar.

He is going to pay these debts so she can go back to live with her kid in Burirum, and she can get a normal job and he will top up her salary if needed.
Everyone happy.

Except now the bar is demanding 50,000 baht from him so she can go”retire” from the bar.
And she is agreeing with the Mamasan. “Justified” because Mamasan gave her the job, accommodation, lent her money, bought her clothes etc

It is getting ugly.
He is refusing. Mamasan isn’t budging.

Why can’t she just quit like at any other job?
Interested to hear views from other bar owners.

Is this standard or are they taking the pi55?

Basically the "buy me out of the bar" is a ruse by the bar to compensate them for the loss of a "valuable" staff member...

The money usually gets divided up between the bar and staff member on say a 70-30 split.

It is to enable the girl to go back to work in the bar - a sort of "no hard feelings for leaving you" gift and should enable her return to work if things don't work out. You could even say it comes under "greng jai."

I have a mate who owns a bar and they "ask" for about 10k...and sometimes get it. (But the women are mostly in their 40s and 50s and anything but "hot" :whistling:)

What some posters don't get is the "obligation" many Thais feel to any employer or perceived social superiors. Just look at how the staff in a bank, office, or security "wai" their "bosses" in the morning.

I agree. Thai acquaintance of mine owns a bar on Samui and the 'buy out' for a good looking girl is 10k. This is split roughly in the percentages you mention between the bar and girl.

Many years ago I was a bit of a barfly. It seemed to be the case that particularly in the smaller bars run by a Thai mamassan, a lot of the girls came from the same village as mamassan. I got the impression they didn't want to cause any ill feeling with the boss by just leaving. This could have ramifications between the families back in the village. The 'buy out' seemed to keep everyone happy and left the door open for a return when/if the relationship with the punter went sour.

So it is a thing and all the other members saying it is not didn’t know what they were talking about.

Can always rely on Keeps for accurate information.

Especially when it comes to paying prostitutes.

Thanks champ.

Alright I will tell my friend to just pay it. It is grengjai Thai culture.
Maybe the bar could give me a free bar fine for managing the negotiations to show me some grengjai also.

Are you aware the world's oldest profession has been around since the beginning of man?  Shortly after Adam and Eve (Eve’s fault) were kicked out of the Garden of Eden.

Or is this a new concept you’ve recently discovered?

Are you a “save the world “ and a “do gooder”    type online while participating when “no one’s watching “.?  More likely than not.

What was the barfine price for Eve back in the day?

If it is a common question, then it has been addressed  previously multiple times.

The purchase of human flesh by losers seeking to exploit vulnerable and desperate people is indeed disgusting.

Repeated discussions n effect normalize the exploitation of  people.

Only to those who  seek approval of others as they exploit other humans. What's next a price list or a listing of bars on where to find 12 year olds for lewd sexual acts?

Your trying to cover up what the thread is about: The normalization of sexploitation. You are all for it. and so are some others. Well, I am not. You want to promote the depravity, fine. I can say no to it.

So you named yourself Patong after the beach and temples?

He'd probably need a GoFundMe to cobble 10k THB together.

It's also a steep price to pay for what, around 4 days? Can't see it being any longer than that before any self respecting girl would ditch the bogan.

Bit out of Malky boys price range.

He is 58, divorced and seems fairly well off - but he is an idiot.

any self respecting girl

We are talking prostitutes, not about girls with self respect.

Any girl with self respect would be free.

Funny how life works.

I think it's mostly a made up scam between the girl and the bar.  However, the girl could owe the bar money from a loan or whatever and the bar wants to get repaid.

It's a job, she quits end of story.

Her job is to squeeze as much lucre as possible out of those who swarm around Thailand's bars looking for 'love'. She seems to be quite adept at it.

Why on earth do you old guys think these girls like you

Well in my case it is because I am handsome!

On my occasional forays to the very limited bar scene in my neck of the woods I chat, flirt, buy drinks for the girl who I am with and enjoy myself. I don't shag them, bar fine or grope. I do usually enjoy a kiss when I leave the bar. But then, as I said, I am universally regarded as handsome.

Because she's a scammer, trying to extort money.

Which gives the guy a good warning.

We can explain it to these newbies over and over ........ but we can't understand it for them .   Even after the first scam..... the next one is "different".

Technically its human trafficking by the bar, prostitution by the girl, and paying for prostitution / to the pimp by the guy.

All breaking the law.

It always used to be 10k, even in the most popular bars, 50k is absolutely taking the pi$$.

Has anyone ever heard of anyone paying this before?

The bar seems to think it is standard process.

different city, quite a while ago and less money involved... but yes.

barfine back then was 200thb, the farewell payment 8500thb.

The way I understand it: this is a mixture of things and dependencies.
On a business level, the bar loses an earner. For an hour or a night, it's a barfine. For a long holiday with a customer or a total checkout, it's a larger sum.
Often, the girls are very much integrated into a bar, almost like family, living, sleeping, eating there. Think of it as a kind of sin sot and "go with our blessing"—nobody will talk badly about the girl, and if things don't work out, the door will be open.

Thankyou.

A lot of the less inexperienced members were trying to say it wasn’t a thing at all.
