Thailand to Reclassify Cannabis as Controlled Substance

Recommended Posts

About time, at last some one with some sense. Untold destruction this disgusting drug has caused for tourism and the nation as a whole. Let's hope the medical certificate will be policed properly. Maybe Thailand will get back to being a safe place for families again

Why jump from one extreme to another. Some people wish to use it as a recreational drug, just as they do with cigarettes. Banning the substance is not the answer; it will only create pushers, jail more users, waste police time.

Why not make it less available:
1. restrict the number of outlets (say 2 in Pattaya, 4 in Bangkok, etc) by charging a huge licence fee, to the highest bidders. 2. charge a very high duty on the sale of the product.

Like cigarettes the product should not be flaunted to the sight if non-users and children.

Would be an option. And a valid ID for registration as a user 👍

November 11, 2025 apparently is the day.

Cannabis or marijuana again going underground on November 11 2025 after minister’s order on Monday

Thailand’s cannabis free-for-all is over. Minister Somsak signs a sweeping crackdown, shutting down most of 18,000 weed shops. From Nov 11, 2025, only prescription use is legal. Recreational cannabis goes underground as reclassification as a narcotic also looms.

Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsutin has slammed the brakes on Thailand’s cannabis free-for-all. On Monday, he signed off on sweeping new rules that will gut the country’s booming weed industry and shut down the vast majority of its 18,000 cannabis outlets. The crackdown isn’t just regulatory—it’s a death sentence for recreational use. New controls take effect on November 11, 2025. But the hammer is already falling. Somsak is going further, fast-tracking cannabis back onto the Schedule 5 narcotics list. That means police will soon have full authority to arrest, prosecute and jail anyone caught with weed outside strict medical channels. Cannabis is headed back underground. No more open sales. No more smoke shops. From now on, it’s prescription-only—or it’s a crime.

Again, stupidity do not have limits, and you do not even know yourself do you? Getting annoyed by common sense.

😁👏👏👏👏👏

I guve you teaspoons of information if that helps. Public do care, thats why this is news, and new regulations and better regulations needed for everyones best.

You know when there need to be put up signs to ask their customers not to smokey their joints in public in one of the busiest streets in Bangkok

The vast majority of the public do not care, you are confusing the whinging of a tiny but very vocal  minority with the views of the silent majority who are not inclined to comment at all.

As for putting up signs, there is nothing new about no smoking signs and I guarantee the restaurant has similar signs politely asking cigarette smokers not to smoke too so I can't see the point of the photo at all

People smoking cigarettes in "non smoking" areas are generally subject to a fine of up to 5000 baht. I see no reason why somebody smoking a joint should be subject to a more severe penalty

Do not kill the messenger

This became a bit more entertaining than I hoped for

Just by providing common sense you become the enemy of weed smokers. Absolutely fantastic

A sound proof weed is not healthy if you ask me. It does something with your common sense.

Follow the script, never admit anything.

So can you still grow your own?

If they push this law thru i just wonder how difficult it is going to be to get a doctors prescription?

Once they know the jig, doctors will probably charge a few thousand baht, rather than a couple of hundred per script for foreigners.

You earned at best a warning for personal insults.

All I claim, weed smokers have themselves to blaim for being stupid smoking in public.

No, I would prefer to argue with someone who has something more than you can offer.

Besides, I think that I was quite clear when I told you to jog on.

Do I need need me to explain this to you as well?

I think smoking it in public (like walking down the street as you say etc...) is actually prohibited and so is cannabis containing more than 0.2% THC. But walk into any C.Shop and they would sell 20% thc or even more cannabis products (which i think is insane), without any legal consequences or police involvement etc...So not sure how prohibiting something that is already illegal would change anything in terms of legal supervision and prosecution.

I agree - but I think as a result of the very negative social media comments by Thais and Tourists about the issue, there will be a crackdown by the Police - once it is declared a controlled substance.  At the moment anything that is keeping the Chinese tourists away is being addressed - and this is one of them. How long it will last - who knows - but in the early days it would be wise to keep the old noggin under the radar.

It has always intrigued me as to why the staunch anti cannabis brigade spend so much time on cannabis based threads.  Trolling and generally insulting others is strange behaviour from people trying to or claiming to occupy the moral high ground.

The really amazing thing is that their aversion to cannabis is based on 100 year old propaganda from the USA

This question will probably get me laughed off the thread, but:

OK, so I go to the doctor and get my 30-day prescription for cannabis use. But will I still be able to buy edibles? I'd love to be able to buy Zoots and Big Bad Bears in order to deal with my medical condition.

Once you've done edibles, you can't go back 🙂 I vastly prefer them to smoking!

I would claim you you are part of the problem wen you do not understand simple things.

You try your best to insult me (lame attempt by the way) and tell me to jog off 😁👏👏👏👏

Well done

Good question - wait to see what they do - proposal then talk then committee then agreed payments then over to the public servants - then some time later (1 week to 5 years) there will be great fanfare and it is then approved within a week and takes effect immediately.  Enforcement? Another process altogether - this one will start quickly (for media stories) but it will eventually include discussions over the amount of agreed payments.
