You gotta admit, this is a good thing, how the government allowed it in the first place is unbelievable. You only have to walk, or if you dare to drive around the streets of Pattaya/Jomtien to see the amount of spaced out ganga cadets and the destruction of quality of life they have caused to residents and tourists. Top marks for this legislation 👍

Cant say I've seen the streets full of spaced out 'ganga cadets'

I've seen daily reports of drunken tourists brawling in the streets though.

You don't get 20 years for taking a few ciggies through the border, grow up wil you

Your argument (well you don't actually have one really) is flawed.

'So far this year, 173 people accused of smuggling cannabis – nearly all from Thailand – have gone through the court system in the UK and received sentences totalling 230 years.'

My calculation makes that 15 months each, not 20 years as you state- you are the one who needs to grow up.

The Thai government's push to recriminalize cannabis under the pretext of protecting youth is a masterclass in moral panic policymaking. While real threats to young people, such as abysmal job prospects, rampant road fatalities, alcohol abuse, and cigarette addiction, go largely unaddressed (except for repeated unsuccessful campaigns), cannabis is scapegoated with vague statistics and anecdotal fearmongering.

Claims of edibles "accidentally" reaching children ignore the basic fact that these are sold in age-restricted shops, so perhaps the issue lies with negligent parenting, not plant-based gummies.

If policymakers want to gut an industry supporting thousands of jobs and attracting tourism, they’d better bring peer-reviewed science, not bedtime stories.

Rubbish

Cannabis shop operators have significantly contributed to Pattaya's economy over the past three years," said Pranchai. "Some tourists come specifically for legal cannabis access."

And some leave because of it.

It's safe to say that after these shops popped up, Thailand has been attracting a slightly different kind of people. Not for the better, in my opinion. Good riddance, if the authorities can limit these shops, and limit or stop people openly smoking weed in public places.

Good, might finally get rid of the dank stank in my condo and in and around the beaches where I walk. Ferkin' tired of self centered high flyers lighting up wherever and whenever they want to stinking up the place.

This. Living in Jomtien and Pattaya has significantly changed over the years, and on top of that, now I have to walk through this smell at public places, sidewalks and at the beach most days, whether I like it or not. And I can assure you this smell is not sitting well in my nose.

The people who need cannabis for health reasons don't need a shop or two on every block.  They don't need these neighborhoods flooded with the smoke.  It's remarkable how these shops manage to stay in business with so few customers.

It is clear that these shops exist so people can engage in recreational use of cannabis.  The Health Minister is attempting to prohibit that.  If Thailand wants to allow this, then it would seem they need a law to do that and a debate on what the restrictions are on these places.   What they have done is create a wild west where anything goes, and now they are trying to put the brakes on it   Good luck with that.

The proposal that there be areas of the city where they can operate would be fine if there were huge parts of the city where we don't have to put up with them.  It isn't the sale that most people object to; it is being assaulted with the smoke. And of course, this would allow the police to make money taking bribes to operate where they weren't supposed to.

Whats ganga? Do try to keep up.

If you mean weed, it certainly does not make you angry, just showing your ignorance.

A Thai friend of mine told me once that for 500k you can get a blind eye turned to an entire shipping container.

They've been turning a blind eye for free. All the busts have happened at the other end.

Weed makes people violent and angry according to the latest research..the ole hippy trippy 1970s myth is just that, a myth...it is a mind altering drug and associated with pyscopic behaviour..why do you think the correlation of violence in Thailand has increased exponentially since the introduction of weed shops everywhere...I think you need to take a stark look at yourselfes and other ganga cadets

It's a 10's of billions baht industry annually.

Doubt that...... all I see are empty  little shops. There are 10 bars for every one of them. The other thing that the Thais don't seem to like is that many Westerners are getting caught with tens of Kg of the stuff in their luggage, that started off in Thailand.

Where is something about alcohol mentioned?

And you don't know anything about cannabis. I suppose you're a user. So how many of your brain cells are already destroyed?

Read the post I quoted, the word is in it!

Never touch the stuff and I don't see it as a big issue, just a small one!
