A man wanted for the 2006 murder of a police cadet has been arrested after nearly two decades on the run, authorities confirmed.

Officers from The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), in coordination with the Crime Suppression Division (CSD), apprehended 43-year-old Mr Natthawut, at a residence in Thoeng District, Chiang Rai Province. He faces charges of murder in connection with the fatal stabbing of a Royal Police Cadet in Bangkok nearly 19 years ago.

The incident occurred in 2006 when Police Cadet Thanawat was dining with friends. A nearby group of intoxicated men, including the suspect, began causing a disturbance by throwing drinking glasses on the floor. When Cadet Thanawat intervened to caution them, a heated argument broke out. Mr Natthawut allegedly drew a knife and stabbed the cadet in the right side of the torso. Thanawat later died from his injuries.

While other suspects were arrested and prosecuted at the time, Mr Natthawut managed to evade capture and remained a fugitive for almost two decades.

Recently, investigators received intelligence that the suspect had been living quietly in Chiang Rai Province. Armed with a search warrant and arrest warrant, officers moved in and detained Mr Natthawut without incident. He has since been transferred to Udomsuk Police Station in Bangkok for further legal proceedings.

The arrest operation was conducted under the direction of Police Lieutenant General Jiraphop Bhuridej, Commissioner of the CIB; Police Major General Witiya Sriprasertphap, Commander of the CSD; and Police Colonel Ekkasit Pansita, Superintendent of Subdivision 4, CSD.

Well I hope he enjoys the next 20 years in a shared cell...
