A senator, recently accused of sexually molesting an ex-news anchor, remains embroiled in a high-profile theft case from a fatal accident four years ago, according to Bang Pakong police.

Pol Col Phongsan Meesri reported the theft case involves valuables worth over 1.5 million baht stolen by two rescue volunteers, one of whom later became a senator in June last year.

The incident occurred shortly after midnight on 31 May 2021, when police responded to an overturned vehicle in Bang Pakong district, Chachoengsao. Relatives of the deceased reported missing items from the crash site.

CCTV revealed a truck with two men, identified as rescue volunteers, arriving at the scene. Both admitted to the theft and returned items, including phones and a Louis Vuitton handbag. However, cash, a gold necklace, and a valuable amulet remain missing, amounting to 1.2 million baht.

Despite the case reaching prosecutors in 2021 with charges of nighttime theft using a vehicle, progress has stalled as the senator repeatedly delayed proceedings citing parliamentary duties. A witness hearing is scheduled for 6 August.

Pol Col Phongsan expressed surprise at the senator’s vetting success despite pending charges. The case has resurfaced due to social media linking the senator to both this and a recent sexual misconduct allegation.

The latter was filed by Natthasinee Pinyopiyavid, 39, a former news anchor and Senate adviser, who accused the senator of ethics violations and sexual assault in May. In response, the senator has filed a defamation suit against Natthasinee, claiming she pursued him.

Public attention remains riveted as both allegations challenge the senator’s credibility and raise concerns about oversight processes.
