Tensions along the Thailand-Cambodia border have eased, with military officers from both nations now meeting thrice weekly in the disputed Emerald Pagoda area. These informal discussions aim to prevent further conflict, according to Lt Gen Boonsin Padklang, commander of Thailand’s Second Army Region.

While these meetings help, Lt Gen Boonsin emphasised that high-level talks between Thai and Cambodian leaders could further stabilise the situation and guide troops stationed along the border.

He reiterated Thailand’s desire to avoid conflict, although troops remain prepared to defend the territory if necessary. The commander is optimistic about achieving lasting peace before his mandatory retirement at the end of September.

In addition to diplomatic efforts, the Second Army Region is enhancing local infrastructure. An engineering unit is constructing roads to Phu Chong-Na Yoi National Park and Yod Dome Wildlife Sanctuary in Ubon Ratchathani to boost tourism. A demining unit is also clearing landmines along the K-5 route near the Cambodian border.

Improving these long-neglected border roads, abandoned since 2011, is seen as vital. These developments signal a commitment to both security and regional development.

Simple solution is to just accept that "ownership" is currently sketchy so both sides back off and treat the area as joint property and allow both sides to come and go as they like. Let's face it there's nothing there to get excited about other than it being an interesting historic site.
