A flying tackle by a quick-thinking gold shop employee brought a daring thief to justice on evening of 12 July, after a man attempted to flee with eight stolen gold necklaces worth approximately 500,000 baht.

The incident unfolded at a shopping mall in central Ranong when the suspect, a 35-year-old unemployed man originally from Trang province, snatched the items from the display of a jewellery shop and made a dash out of the exit.

However, his getaway was short-lived. A determined store employee gave chase through the crowded mall and after a 90-metre sprint, launched a flying tackle that brought the thief crashing to the ground.

Police arrived quickly and arrested the suspect at the scene. Officers later confirmed that the man has a criminal record, including previous convictions for fraud and gold theft. He had recently relocated to Ranong from Trang.

All eight gold necklaces were recovered intact.

The actions of the employee have been widely praised on Thai social media, with many calling him a “real-life action hero”. Police are continuing their investigation and have stated that the suspect will face further charges related to the attempted theft.
