Authorities in Rayong have uncovered 22 undocumented foreign workers during a surprise inspection of a factory in the Nikhom Phatthana district. The group, consisting of Chinese, Taiwanese, Vietnamese and Myanmar nationals, attempted to evade capture, with some leaping over obstacles and hiding behind sheets of metal, but were eventually detained.

The operation was conducted on 14 July by a team led by Rayong MPs Ms. Sawangjit Laoharojanapan and Mr. Krit Sinlaphachai, in coordination with officials from the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand and the provincial employment office. The raid followed a tip-off suggesting illegal foreign workers were employed at the site, alongside reports of irregular construction within the industrial estate.

Upon arrival, officials scoured various parts of the premises and discovered numerous workers who appeared to be evading the inspection. Some were found sheltering from rain outside, while others had concealed themselves behind metal sheets stacked against the walls.

A document check revealed that 22 foreign nationals did not possess valid work permits. They were subsequently escorted to Nikhom Phatthana Police Station for further questioning. Authorities have charged the individuals with working without authorisation, an offence punishable by fines and deportation.

MP Krit confirmed that the inspection was launched in response to public complaints about the unlawful employment of foreign nationals. He stated, “We received credible information about the smuggling of unlicensed foreign workers. Upon inspection, we confirmed the presence of workers without proper documentation. All cases will be recorded and handed over to investigators for legal action.”

In addition to the immigration violations, the team also discovered several unauthorised construction projects underway on the premises. These irregularities have been referred to the Industrial Estate Authority for further review. Pending their findings, a decision will be made on whether to suspend or halt the ongoing construction activities.

The incident underscores ongoing concerns about illegal labour practices and unregulated development within industrial zones.
