A 65-year-old retired civil servant was reportedly abducted and severely beaten by a group of men believed to be close associates of a Member of Parliament (MP) for Songkhla. The incident, which took place late on 10 July in Ranot District, has left local residents shocked and raised serious concerns about abuse of political power.

According to the victim’s wife, Mrs Daeng 64, the group of 4–5 men arrived in a white van at their home in Moo 4, Rawaw Subdistrict, around 22:00. The men asked for someone named “Mee” and upon her husband Mr Khiew stepping outside, one of the men grabbed him by the neck, dragged him beside their house and slammed his head into a wall before forcing him into the van.

The attackers then drove the vehicle approximately two kilometres away to a secluded area near the coastline, where they allegedly beat the elderly man, stripping him naked and leaving him bloodied. His injuries included a broken rib, chest trauma, extensive bruising and a torn finger.

Mrs Daeng stated that her husband had never been involved in any disturbances and refuted claims that he had thrown stones at neighbours’ homes, as some had alleged. In fact, their own home had also been pelted with stones recently. The couple had returned to the village four years ago after retiring from government service in Yala.

The victim, currently receiving treatment at Ranot Hospital, said he did not recognise any of his assailants but was later told they were associated with a prominent local MP. He maintains he had no involvement in the stone-throwing incidents and suspects the attackers mistook him for someone else.

Mr Som 42, the victim’s son, added that tensions had been rising in the village ever since the same MP, accompanied by his aides, local police officers and village leaders, conducted an unannounced late-night drug raid approximately 10 days before the attack. During that operation, Som said one of the MP’s aides, the same man who allegedly attacked his father, entered their property without warning, leading to a verbal altercation.

Som believes the assault on his father was a retaliatory act meant for him, triggered by that earlier confrontation. He vowed that the family would pursue legal action and not accept any out-of-court settlement, demanding a full and transparent investigation from Ranot Police Station.

The case has drawn public outrage, with calls mounting for an inquiry into the MP’s involvement and for the protection of civilians from political intimidation.
