It does question the usefulness of that emoticon...@Mods should perhaps review the (mis)use of thumbs down and either remove it, or limit it to 5 per person per day.

As for your promulgation of the notion that CATO's intent is to bring attention to the impending SS benefit reduction upon the demise of OASI funds.... that is just hogwash.  Many much better informed sources have been blasting out the facts on SS shortfalls without the extreme angst that CATO is injecting into the topic.

The fact is, once the fake trust fund runs over the benefits will be cut.

Yes... because instead of the 'public debt' total being held down by the influx of the excess FICA taxes, Treasury would have had to sell T-bills to the public...  Consequently, the 'public debt' would have been higher for decades.  But of course.... through out all those years the total NATIONAL DEBT would be unaffected...... because the NATIONAL DEBT consists of both intragovernmental and public debt.

You admit the money was spent, and they have to find a way to cover the short falls with more debt or taxation.

What does it hurt? Do you view it as a “micro aggression”?

I always give a thumbs-down to anyone moaning about getting thumbs-down.

It is just pointless - as you have kindly proved with your comment 😊

It is akin to knocking on someone's door and running away.............cowardly and anonymous. If one feels strongly enough about a post, then comment on it.

And as long as you keep standing on the porch, red-faced, shaking yiur fist and yelling, the kids are going to keep ringing the bell.

We used to call it “doorbell-ditch” or “thunder and lightning”

I had the sense not to answer the door and have certainly never shook my fist at anyone.......... I had a feeling that you might have first hand experience... 😉

Can't the Mexicans pay for this?

The Canadians should be chipping in too. They have been ripping off Orangeland just as much as the Mexicans.

Precisely, based upon current funding amounts and methods.  I understood many years ago that SS funding needed to be increased otherwise big cuts would be mandatory.

You,  CATO and @JimGant have the timing of the debt creation wrong.  The debt was created when Treasury sold the GAS securities to the OASI trust fund.  The Congress at the time of the boom in FICA tax collection (in fact almost always) is guilty of spending in excess of government revenues which created the need for OASI's funds.

no..... they don't need to cover the shortfall ..... yet.   And.... current laws actually prohibit more debt from being created to bolster SS funding.  Look up the Antideficiency Act.  So far extra debt has NOT been created and that law stipulates that when OASI is depleted the benefits MUST be cut instead of debt being created.  CATO is lying about the current situation.  Only if Congress changes the existing law(s) will any debt be created by SS or Disability benefit payments.

Once again using terms that are confusing to the lay people and ignoring the history of the OASI and the reduction in the unified budget deficit during the boom FICA collection years. It's no coincidence that Social Security's current addition to the unified budget deficit is precisely EQUAL to the previous reduction... so SS's net contribution to the unified budget deficit over the span of its existence has been ZERO.  That's a fact by design and by law.

If they didn't steal from the SS trust fund, it would be over funded. Plenty of people die before they see a dime back from what they put in. And whom do we owe these national debts to exactly? They print money out of thin air for bombs, yet we're going to bankrupt our pension system?

It's all smoke and mirrors. It's all Agenda 21, you will own nothing and be happy.  The planned obsolescence of the human and the conversion of the remaining humans into transhumans.

What a coincidence all things are coming to a head under the reign of Elvis Trump aka Evils Tr(i)ump...
