Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City has introduced a cutting-edge facial recognition check-in system at its new domestic Terminal 3. This innovation allows passengers to swiftly navigate the often cumbersome airport security process in mere minutes using the VNeID app.

Gone are the traditional, time-consuming procedures. Instead, passengers are now assisted by police and airline staff to check in online via the VNeID app. Facial recognition scanners then verify their identity, allowing them to bypass conventional ticket and document checks. These scanners at security checkpoints enable travellers to proceed through the airport almost instantly.

Local resident Nguyen Vu Khuong Duy expressed his enthusiasm for the new system, highlighting how it cuts down the usual 30 to 45-minute process to just 10 to 15 minutes. “It is faster and more convenient, like what we see in modern international airports in developed countries,” he remarked.

Another traveller, Nguyen Duy Khang, who was heading to Phu Quoc island, praised the biometric system for being "quick and time-saving," adding that it has notably improved the convenience of air travel.

This technological upgrade is part of a broader initiative to incorporate digital innovations into Vietnam's civil aviation sector. By embedding biometric data such as facial recognition into the VNeID system, which is also in use at Noi Bai and Da Nang airports, Vietnam aims to phase out paper-based procedures. The overarching goal is to enhance passenger experience, bolster aviation security, and contribute to the country’s digital transformation.

Terminal 3, opened in late April, stands as Vietnam's largest airport terminal, designed to accommodate 20 million passengers annually. It currently services routes operated by Vietnam Airlines. This advancement not only signifies a leap in passenger processing but also places Vietnam at the forefront of aviation innovation, aligning with global standards while catering to its rapidly growing number of air travellers.
