A 31-year-old woman from Satun, Thailand, experienced a shocking revelation when what she believed to be excess weight was diagnosed as an 8-kilogramme ovarian tumour.

Ratchanaporn lived for years with the massive cyst unknowingly. Her family assumed her round belly was due to overeating. The truth came to light when her symptoms worsened, making it difficult for her to breathe.

Her mother, Ratchanee, sought medical help at Satun Hospital when Ratchanaporn's condition became alarming. "She was experiencing tightness, difficulty breathing, and her eyes seemed to bulge," Ratchanee explained. "We thought she was pregnant with twins."

Initially perplexed by Ratchanaporn's swollen abdomen, doctors considered pregnancy. However, an ultrasound soon revealed the true cause: a substantial 30-centimetre ovarian cyst was pressing against her organs.

On 31 July, Dr Thamon Niamrat led a surgical team at Satun Hospital to remove the tumour. The operation, lasting over six hours, was challenging due to the cyst's size and complexity.

"She went into surgery at noon and didn’t come out until around 6 pm," Ratchanee recounted. "It was such a long wait. I was incredibly stressed."

Post-surgery, doctors confirmed the cyst weighed 8kg, approximately the weight of a full-term baby. They also took tissue samples for further analysis, with results expected on 19 August, according to updates shared online.

Ratchanaporn's weight dropped from 86kg to 75kg following the operation, leaving her feeling significantly more comfortable.

"We never imagined it was something this severe," her mother remarked. "We just thought she enjoyed her food."

The remarkable case was highlighted by the Dr Thamon Satun Obstetrics and Gynaecology Clinic on Facebook, commending the hospital's surgeons for their skilled removal of the tumour and ongoing patient care.

"This is just one of many such cases. Uterine tumours and ovarian cysts are increasingly common. Thankfully, this patient is now recovering," stated the clinic.

This intriguing and cautionary tale serves as a reminder of the unexpected ways serious health issues can manifest. The eruption of similar cases has heightened awareness around the management of ovarian health, emphasising the importance of medical evaluation in seemingly benign symptoms.

Ratchanaporn’s story has garnered attention across social media, illustrating both the challenges faced by patients dealing with undisclosed health issues and the diligence of healthcare professionals in tackling them. The impressive outcome showcases the critical role of timely medical intervention and dedicated care.

As Ratchanaporn begins her path to recovery, her experience stands as a hopeful narrative about overcoming medical hurdles. This case reinforces the significance of vigilant healthcare and the profound impact it can have on individuals' lives. The medical field continues to evolve to meet these challenges, ensuring more stories like Ratchanaporn’s end on a positive note.
