Cybercrime officers issued a warning about a new type of cyberattack known as “Choicejacking,” which targets mobile phones via public charging stations. This advanced form of attack is an evolution of “Juice Jacking,” where hackers use disguised charging devices to trick phones into approving file transfers instead of just charging. The malicious device mimics a USB input to send commands that automatically grant permission for data transfer within milliseconds, often too fast for the user to notice. Some attacks exploit vulnerabilities in certain Android devices using the Android Open Accessory Protocol (AOAP). Once the hackers gain access, they can steal photos, read messages or install harmful software on the device immediately. Cyber police advise the public to avoid using unknown public charging devices found in airports, hotels, cafes and other public areas. Instead, they recommend carrying a personal power bank, plugging devices directly into a power outlet, enabling “charge only” mode and regularly updating software to protect against such threats. The authorities emphasised vigilance in protecting personal data in an increasingly connected world. Adapted by Asean Now from Matichon 2025-08-12
