A collision in Phang Nga, left eight schoolchildren injured and a driver fighting for his life after a pick-up truck driver veered across road and smashed head-on into a school transport vehicle.

The crash happened at around 16.30 on 27 August on a sharp curve in Moo 2, Tambon Mo, Kapong district, Phang Nga province. CCTV from a nearby shop captured the moment the pick-up driver lost control on the rain-slicked road before careering into the oncoming vehicle.

The school bus, a modified Isuzu pick-up carrying pupils home from Takuapa Senanukul School, was driven by a woman whose identity has not yet been released. She suffered serious head and neck injuries in the impact.

The other vehicle, a bronze pick-up truck driven by Mr Prasert Chatwilai, spun out of control before colliding with the school bus. Mr Prasert was rushed to hospital in a critical condition with head and chest injuries.

Eight students were treated for a range of injuries, including head wounds, bruises and broken limbs, but all are expected to recover.

Police at Kapong Station believe the crash was caused by wet and slippery conditions combined with the dangerous bend and speed. Officers have secured CCTV footage from the scene to assist in their ongoing investigation.
