A homeless scrap collector was killed instantly on 27 August after a damaged portable gas cylinder exploded while he was scavenging in a wooded area near Nakhon Pathom.

 

Police said the blast occurred in scrubland just 200 metres from Phetkasem Road in Mueang Nakhon Pathom District. Officers from Mueang Nakhon Pathom Police Station, rescue volunteers from the Suksala Nakarak Foundation and forensic investigators attended the scene.

 

The victim, identified as Saroj was found lying dead on the ground. His face and torso were blackened with soot like reside and he had a severe chest wound. Nearby, police recovered fragments of a portable gas cylinder believed to have caused the explosion. His tricycle cart, used for collecting scrap materials, was found parked close to the body.

 

A friend of the deceased, Suchon, who also works as a scrap collector in the area, told police he had spoken with Saroj earlier that morning before they went their separate ways to search for items. Not long afterwards, a loud explosion echoed through the forest. When he and local residents rushed to investigate, they discovered Saroj’s body surrounded by debris.

 

Police believe the victim may have attempted to cut or pry open the old gas cylinder to check whether it could still be sold, unaware it was still pressurised. The resulting blast sent metal fragments into his chest, killing him instantly.
