A 17-year-old schoolgirl was killed when her motorbike hit a pothole and was subsequently run over by a lorry in Mae Chan district, Chiang Rai.

The fatal incident occurred at around 21.00 on 28 August on a road near the local electricity office, opposite a private vehicle inspection centre in Pa Tung sub-district. According to police, the girl, Ms Chulawan Phuphanpheng, was riding a Honda Wave 125 motorbike registered in Chiang Rai when she lost control after hitting a large pothole.

A ten-wheel lorry, also registered in Chiang Rai, was travelling behind her at the time and ran over her, leaving the teenager fatally injured. The crash was captured on the dashcam of a following vehicle.

Rescue workers from the Saeng Tham Foundation and local emergency services recovered the motorbike and the victim from under the lorry and rushed her to Mae Chan Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Police noted that the road in the area was badly damaged, with multiple potholes.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances and the condition of the road, while urging motorists to exercise caution in the area.
