Wow, where can I get such a health insurance?

  • 60 baht water bill? Either I'm being ripped off or Simon isn't showering enough 😊 A dirty 'farang'? 😊 Maybe he uses the shower at the gym and pool. I've seen a few foreigners save money that way.

He looks much younger than he is.

Probably because he never has any fun.

If you're of a U.K.  pensionable age the cost of a continually eroding frozen pension needs to be factored in too.

I'm not from UK, but I do think that many prices in Thailand 10 years ago, are pretty much the same today. I don't agree with those saying Thailand has become so much more expensive now, around me I think I pay pretty much the same for my lifestyle, only slightly more.

Although the Pound may have taken a hit compared to Baht, so I can see that concern.

I feel for you guys with frozen pensions, I'm thinking about that every year when they raise mine.

There are many great dishes out there for 50 baht

Yes but his average is 50 baht. So some must be less than 50 baht and I think those are few and far between these days if in a restaurant. Maybe he cooks at home, in which case some rice and chicken or pork might average out at 50 baht.  🤷‍♂️

He must live a very simple existence. I also wonder how many farang he has contact with and whether he speaks Thai. After a while he might feel lonely…or maybe not.

And finally, if he has to pay a visa agent for his visa because he doesn’t have the income or money in the bank, then those aren’t cheap these days.

But sure, I think it’s possible to live as cheaply as he claims, but would I WANT to?

Living in a 32 to 45sq met condo gets old fast. The walls close in on you after a while. He doesn't mention transportation.

I don't, and I know that's not helping, but on youtube you'll find thousands of videos explaining the exact same thing. That you can live reasonably well for 1000-1500 USD a month in Thailand, and they'll break it down for you.

These videos have brought thousands and thousands of retired foreigners to Thailand, who want to escape the increase of living costs in their own country, but might not really cover the financial requirements to live here in Thailand, and therefore many use visa agents.

Nothing wrong with that, and I could probably live on that amount too, but I'm glad I don't have to.

Yeah, and meals on average for 50 baht... What does Simon eat; rice with extra rice?? - Seems, he eats like an Esarn farmer. 😆

No, not at all. 50 baht is a normal price for local Thai food for the type of place that has many prepared foods on display, you pick out 2, they put atop a plate of rice and bring it to you at a table. Yesterday I paid 40 baht for just that. Delicious, freshly and satisfying.

Pruteu, noodle soup, is generally between 40 and 60 baht, cheaper outside Bangkok.

He's integrated, eating primarily local food and living in a Thai style room at a reasonable cost. Good quality of life and at a fraction of the cost (and stress) of retirement in his country of nationality.

He has legs.

That is all you need for a break from a concrete bunker.

I saw the guy on TicToc. He obviously pretends to be younger than he is, and his insurance premium, assuming he is out for the cheapest option, would put him in the 60s. At this price it would only cover in-patient, so a root canal etc. would add up. He is well versed, speaks some Thai and seems reasonable, except for his opinion about common Thai women who he believes will not cost him as much as 'professional" ones on the long run.

Sheer luxury. I'm still living in hole in road on Sukhumvit.🙃🙃

You are rich when you are content and happy with what you have.

Even, perhaps especially, in some hole-in-the-wall on Sukhumvit.

Not according to Immigration marriage/retirement financial requirements.

I think you have a boring life if you need more than 45k to spend every month...I don't need to drink every day nor beer or whiskey, I don't need to go to restaurants, foodplaza's are ok too and i don't need a happy ending massage every week and a bargirl...My life is not boring at all and I am very happy.. Don't think that all people live a life as you like

I (can)  spend nearer to 90k pm ...........................................and my life is certainly not boring.

Simon will get by financially until the day he dies if he maintains such a limited and lonely life style. Most people, however, will seek companionship and a bit of fun. That would, at least, double his cost of living.

I did.........................it was just that I retired 13 years earlier than originally planned.

A £13k pension at 52 isn't really enough.

Too many things sound a bit off the mark here.
I'll bring up just one.
"with meals averaging 50 baht each. He balances occasional Western cuisine indulgences with cheaper local options"
There is no way on earth unless he's foraging for his  own food! lol
Someone on here said that there are many dishes available for 50 baht. Yeah, there are. But read again! His meals AVERAGE 50 baht! And that average includes "occasional Western cuisine indulgences"?? No way! Unless "occasional" means once a week! Even then, it would drive his average way up. To get down to an average of 50 baht, that means he has many meals for 40 baht and less!??? Where? What is it? Mama noodles with extra fish sauce!? And this in Nonthaburi, which is not some cheap province far off from Bangkok.
Along with other problems in the story, I don't buy it at all.

Agree no one should rely on the condo's wifi. The 1,000 baht is probably a privately installed Internet WiFi and router. But it seems a bit high - think I pay around 650/mo. But I don't have any extras - no English TV channels etc. Condo comes with all the Thai TV channels. No real need for the western channels - I just check the news on their websites occasionally.

Prob has a TV package with the wifi

Nonsense. I wish him all the best, while simply pointing out that not everyone will be willing to maintain such a frugal lifestyle.

I am a minimalist, I'm quite happy with living in a 35 sqm condo, no garden to look after, swimming pool, rubbish collection done. Next to no maintenance needed.

I don't have to worry about security. No thief is going to try breaking into condo apartments. They can't be cased beforehand, and no robber knows what might be waiting behind the door for them.

I live very comfortably, averaging 55,000 baht /month. Without a Thai GF, it would probably come down to 35,000 baht/month.

We have two dwellings, two cars, two scooters. In Australia, a motor home would be my only option.

IMO Thailand is a matter of attitude. If one enjoys the positives, and ignores the crap, it's a great place to retire.

You can live on a shoe string in Thailand, all depend on where and what you're contented and happy with.

Indeed. I was two years planning my retirement and move and finally came here permanently in 2006. To just up sticks and move here on a whim is reckless but I guess some survive.

If he has wifi no reason he can't get simp,ly get a firestick and then he will get a free version of you tube along with a slew of other free streaming sites...i pay for no tv services and have more stuff to watch in English then i will ever want to watch.  It's easy to figure out..if in doubt google it.

I'm sure it's possible on this sort of budget, but for a little more life can be so much better here than back home.

One big factor is a Thai partner ..... while mine saves me money on not needing to pay for housekeeping, visa agents, airport pick ups and carnal pleasures, she has a property improvement addiction - so what I thought was going to be simple condo refit became a major rebuild, and our 'little, basic house by the sea' evolved into a mansion.  Women like to make nests while us men just want to make eggs.

ifestyle in Thailand via a TikTok video,

So many of these videos posted on social media (especially on YouTube) extolling the virtues of living or holidaying in Thailand. Most are a load of cr*p giving misleading information.

I was watching one recently where the vlogger was complaining about excessive construction work going on in Maesai, near the border with Myanmar, creating mud and debris unsightly and difficult to manoeuvre for tourists. It was not construction work, but the clearance of mud and debris from severe flooding!
