Netanyahu's Qatar Gambit: Attempt on Hamas Chiefs Backfires

In a bold move, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered an airstrike targeting Hamas leaders in Qatar, aiming to weaken the organisation. Instead, the attempt appears to have backfired, as the leaders reportedly survived, and the mission has sparked international backlash. Netanyahu's global standing suffers, with pressure mounting on relations with influential U.S. ally Qatar.

The strike came during a critical period as Israel engages in a drawn-out military campaign in Gaza, following the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023. Netanyahu aimed to dismantle Hamas by eliminating senior leaders but now faces criticism and damaged diplomatic ties. The attack has strained relations with the White House and placed ceasefire talks, along with hopes of rescuing 20 hostages in Gaza, in jeopardy.

Qatar, instrumental in past ceasefire negotiations, expressed outrage, further threatening its mediating role in the conflict. Although the Israeli leader maintains strong support from his coalition, internal and external pressures grow. Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Qatar’s prime minister, questioned Israel's commitment to resolving the hostage situation but left the door open for future mediation efforts.

The failed assassination of Hamas leaders highlights the growing complexity of Netanyahu's military strategy. Despite a setback, Netanyahu remains resolute in continuing the offensive against Hamas. As international criticism mounts, the recent actions may alienate a significant portion of the Israeli public seeking an end to the ongoing conflict.

How Netanyahu will handle the situation remains uncertain, especially with U.S. President Donald Trump expressing displeasure over the strike. The focus now shifts to managing diplomatic relations and addressing domestic concerns, even as Israel pursues its military objectives in the Gaza Strip.

Key Takeaways

  • Netanyahu's strike in Qatar has sparked international backlash.
  • Diplomatic tensions rise, potentially endangering ceasefire talks.
  • Domestic pressure increases as opposition to the conflict grows.

I can understand that Israel wants to punish Hamas, after the infamous October raid. However, bombing negotiators is certainly not a sign of any serious intent to negotiate.

The last thing Netanyahu wants is a negotiated end to the conflict.

He wants Gaza destroyed and uninhabitable for annexation.

Can't negotiate with terrorists who are intent, in writing, to push Israel into the sea.

I think he mostly wants to just stay in office as PM so he can avoid some unpleasant court cases.

I wouldn’t call it a backfire, rather unsuccessful in killing the targets. Chaos in the region is BB’s aim and he achieved it. Let’s see if the Gulf nations have enough balls to do what Iran did in retaliation.

How many countries has he bombed just since Oct 7?  Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Qatar, Yemen...  (am I missing any?).  Israel will never have peace if they keep creating enemies faster than they can smite them.  They'll still be fighting in 50, 75 and 100 years, unless one of their enemies gets the bomb.

Where have negotiations gotten them in the past?  In war one side must be destroyed, them you will have peace from them.

In this case, why pretend to negotiate? And why let Trump lose his time trying to negotiate?

Is there any difference between Putin and Hamas leadership?

    They were not negotiators ,

They were Hamas leaders .

Hamas murdered 6 Israelis and an unborn baby a  few days previously and quite possibly it was ordered and organised by the five deceased Hamas leaders/members .

The Doha attack was in response to the Hamas terror attack

Iran , you forgot Iran .

Israel responded to attacks from those Countries .

Those Countries bombed Israel first .

So, Israel bombing those Countries in return isn't actually creating any new enemies , just part of  long term hostilities

Their new enemies are the up and coming generations that have never learned to hate Israel.  Now they do.  Getting bombed does that.

Good catch on Iran, BTW.  I remembered them, but it was too late for an edit.  My brain leaks when I sleep.

An Israeli official was cited as saying the Hamas members targeted included Khalil al-Hayya, the chief negotiator and exiled Gaza leader, and Zaher Jabarin, the exiled West Bank leader.

Maybe like Hamas, the local people will turn against their leaders/ Government and realise its their own Governments fault for attacking Israel

I was actually hoping that was the strategy behind the attack on Iran, and Israel had a brilliant plan in place to support a popular uprising by the moderate majority of Iranians.  But they screwed that pooch.

IMO, getting Iran on board is the only way Israel will survive medium and long term.  They don't even need to be good buddies.  Just tolerate each other.  You know, live and let live and maybe do a little cross border trade.  I think that's possible if moderate Iranians can dump the zealots.  But the moderates need help to do that.  They're too moderate.

Even if he was negotiating  , he was still  Hamas member and a legitimate target for killing
