Starmer Faces Revolt Over Mandelson–Epstein Scandal

Downing Street is scrambling to protect Prime Minister Keir Starmer amid a deepening revolt within Labour following the abrupt dismissal of Lord Peter Mandelson. The crisis erupted after leaked emails revealed Mandelson had expressed sympathy for convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, suggesting his first conviction was “wrongful” and should be challenged.

According to reports, No 10 was made aware of the damaging correspondence at the start of last week but failed to brief the Prime Minister before he publicly expressed confidence in Mandelson during Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday. Mandelson was sacked a day later after the Foreign Office confirmed the revelations.

The fallout has intensified speculation that Starmer could be forced out before the next general election. Mutinous Labour MPs have warned the Prime Minister that he is “supping in the last-chance saloon,” while Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch accused him of going “missing in action.”

Attention has now turned to Starmer’s powerful chief of staff, Morgan McSweeney, with several MPs calling for his resignation. Questions remain over who in Downing Street withheld key details from the Prime Minister and why. Reports also suggest Starmer clashed with McSweeney behind closed doors, demanding to know why he was not shielded from the fallout before his Commons appearance.

The Foreign Office insisted the allegation that Epstein’s conviction was “wrongful” was “new information” that emerged only after the emails were reviewed in full. Nevertheless, critics argue the delay in Starmer’s response has left him politically exposed and vulnerable to a leadership challenge.

Starmer is expected to finally break his silence on the scandal Monday, but the damage to his authority may already be done.

Key Takeaways:

  • Starmer under pressure after sacking Mandelson over Epstein emails.

  • No 10 knew of the allegations before Starmer defended Mandelson in Parliament.

  • MPs warn Starmer’s leadership could collapse before the next election.
