In a staggering crackdown, police have dismantled an international gang suspected of smuggling up to 40,000 stolen mobile phones from the UK to China over the past year. Dubbed the UK’s most significant action against phone theft, 18 individuals have been arrested and more than 2,000 stolen devices seized so far. The Metropolitan Police believe this gang may be responsible for exporting up to half of all stolen phones in London.

The investigation kicked off after a stolen iPhone was tracked by its victim to a warehouse near Heathrow Airport on Christmas Eve last year. The discovery prompted raids on 28 locations in London and Hertfordshire, yielding a trove of stolen devices primarily destined for Hong Kong. Two Afghan nationals in their 30s and a 29-year-old Indian national have been charged with receiving stolen goods and conspiracy, while 15 more suspects were recently apprehended.

This case comes amidst a sharp rise in phone thefts, with incidents in London nearly tripling over the past four years to 80,588 in 2024. With tourist hotspots like Westminster being prime targets, the sale of second-hand phones is booming abroad, particularly in China, where stolen iPhones can fetch up to £4,000 (approximately 180,000 Thai baht). Policing Minister Sarah Jones highlighted a shift from drug dealing to phone theft due to its profitability.

The operation spearheaded by Commander Andrew Featherstone has involved strategic efforts to target thieves, from street-level operatives to international smuggling networks. Despite some criticism from victims regarding police responsiveness, recent figures show a drop in personal robberies by 13% in London this year. The Met continues to combat this issue with a deployment of up to 80 additional officers in key areas.

Key Takeaways:

The UK police seized over 2,000 phones and arrested 18 suspects in a major operation.
Stealing and selling phones has become more lucrative, driving thefts up sharply.
The Met Police reports a 13% drop in robberies this year due to increased operations.
