A devastating attack outside a Manchester synagogue on Yom Kippur saw a suspect pledging allegiance to ISIS, police confirmed. Jihad Al-Shamie, a 35-year-old British man of Syrian descent, reportedly made the pledge during the assault last Thursday. Al-Shamie was shot dead by police during the incident which tragically left two victims, Adrian Daulby, 53, and Melvin Cravitz, 66, dead.

The attack took place at Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue. Greater Manchester Police revealed that one of the victims might have been accidentally shot by firearms officers as they aimed at the assailant. The officers opened fire to prevent Al-Shamie from entering the synagogue and causing further harm to the community.

Al-Shamie, previously arrested on suspicion of rape, was out on bail pending further enquiries. Police mention the possibility that he was influenced by extreme Islamist ideology, though definitive motives remain under investigation. The incident underscores the fragile security situation and raises concerns about violent extremism.

Chief Constable Stephen Watson commented on the incident, expressing sorrow over the unintended victim's death, which happened as officers tried to neutralise the suspect. The shooting is under forensic review to clarify the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

Looking forward, authorities are conducting detailed investigations to substantiate Al-Shamie's links to ISIS and to understand his motivations. Security measures around religious sites are likely to be reassessed, as communities come to terms with the tragedy.
