Blind German Man Unaware of Wife’s Death in Their Home

A 69-year-old blind German man unknowingly sat outside his rented home in Chachoengsao for hours on the evening of 14 October, unaware that his Thai wife had taken her own life inside. Police later discovered the body of 53-year-old Nisara at their residence in Pruksa 36 Village, Soi 14, Khlong Udom Chonlachon subdistrict, after being notified at around 18.30.

Officers from Mueang Chachoengsao Police Station, accompanied by forensic doctors and rescue volunteers, investigated the scene. Mr Dick, the German national, had reportedly been calling for his wife repeatedly from a table outside their home. When there was no response, he sought help from neighbours, who entered the house and found Nisara deceased with a rope tied to the staircase railing.

Neighbours told police that the couple had been renting the property for over a year. Nisara worked as a taxi driver in Bangkok and would return home every few days to care for her husband, who had lost his sight following an accident several years ago. Before leaving for work, she routinely prepared sandwiches for him and stored them in the refrigerator.

According to Ms Nee, a 54-year-old neighbour who speaks German, Mr Dick had retired to Thailand from Germany, where he met Nisara. Since losing his vision, she had become the household’s sole provider, managing both his care and the couple’s financial needs.

Earlier that same day, Nisara returned home by taxi, appearing distressed. She told neighbours she had been involved in a road crash while driving her taxi and that the other party was demanding 40,000 baht in compensation, money she did not have. She said she was waiting at home to try to negotiate a settlement.

Residents believe the pressure of the financial demand, combined with the strain of being the only earner, may have led to her taking her own life. Police transported the body to hospital for an autopsy and are continuing their investigation.

Reading about Pensions in Germany .. Approximately one-third of pensioners receive less than 750 € net per month from the state pension, +/- 28.000.-Bahts 🤔

And what has this to do with this story?

To get a yearly extension of stay you need at least to show 400.000 Baht. Either on the bank or proved by pension, or mixed.

So, yes, he got enough money to stay here.

Officials from the Chachoengsao Office of Social Development and Human Security, together with public health personnel, visited a 69-year-old blind German man on October 15 following the death of his Thai wife, who reportedly took her own life inside their home the previous day. The visit aimed to ensure his safety, welfare, and emotional wellbeing in the wake of the incident.

The man, identified as Mr. Dick, but also known as Jurgen, has lived in Thailand for 16 years. According to officials, he was unaware of his wife’s death at the time of the incident due to his blindness and neighbours later alerted authorities. His wife’s passing has prompted concern among local residents and officials, who have since mobilised to provide immediate care and coordination of support.

Representatives from multiple agencies, including tourist police, immigration police and the German Embassy, have been contacted to assist with communication and to locate Mr. Dick’s relatives in Germany. The authorities are working to ensure that he continues to receive the necessary help while investigations into his wife’s death proceed.

Mr. Dick expressed his desire to remain in Thailand, stating that it has been his home for many years. Officials said arrangements are being made to evaluate his living situation and long-term care options. In the meantime, his neighbours have stepped in to prepare and deliver his daily meals.

A follow-up meeting involving various government and social agencies will be convened to coordinate ongoing support and determine the next steps. Authorities have emphasised their commitment to ensuring the man’s wellbeing and maintaining contact with his family abroad through the German Embassy.

So no decent insurance then on a taxi of all things. I hope he gets the help he needs.

If you lead a blind person they take your arm not you theirs, nice to see he is getting help, but that help should know  this.

It is so good that his neighbours, the local and national authorities are helping him out.

It is sad for him that he is blind and tragic for his wife.

It puts a lie to the naysayers who claim that Thais hate farangs.

And later in the thread it says he lived 16 years in Thailand.

So since age of 53.

Only high earners will have a decent pension quiting that early.

Germany has a miserable state pension system.

RIP young lady

Yes an ex of mine worked for a UK blind institute and this is what she was taught, she even had her blind boss take her to the shops and cross roads while blind folded to assimilate her, also left her in a room alone for a time, as part of her training to show that you never do that, in that photo he is leading her, all those who gave a thumbs down have no idea. :coffee1:

No but with immigration and banks you can use a thumb print.

Without reading what and how to do I would have problems being blind.

Very sad story.  If he has lived in that apartment for a year you would think even as a blind man he could find his way around the house without assistance.  If he has a mobility problem then the best thing for him would be to return to Germany and live out his life in a safe environment.

A very sad story, too bad it's reason for nasty remarks. I hope this guy will find someone to take care of him.

Nonsense again..These aren't excuses for the Immigration Office, I feel pity for the man, but this is Thailand and their “rules”, which they'll tell you is the Agency or for your own wife to fill out paperwork.

Well in case you have not noticed, this is not the UK and he is not English, have you even considered that different countries  might just use different techniques to those used by your ex mrs and her blind boss ?  As long as both the blind guy and his helper are comfortable with their arrangement it doesn't matter how they do things or indeed what you think about it.

You do realise that's only for the signature   ?    There are several forms to actually complete  before one gets to that bit.
