The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) in Thailand has confirmed that a South African national, Benjamin Mauerberger, also known as Ben Smith, has no record of legal violations. Mauerberger was accused of being involved with a call centre scam gang in Cambodia. The confirmation follows attention drawn by Thai MPs Rangsiman Rome and Wiroj Lakkhanaadisorn on September 30, suggesting his connections with influential figures in Thailand and Cambodia.

Mauerberger was alleged to have ties with former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and Cambodia's Senate President Hun Sen. The MPs claimed Mauerberger was part of a network linked to scam operations and had close associations with Thailand's Deputy PM Thamanat Prompow. Rangsiman referenced a report by Tom Wright stating that Mauerberger acted as a "fixer," coordinating between notable political figures.

Further allegations included an attempt by Mauerberger to acquire shares in Bangchak Corporation for mutual benefit with Thaksin and Hun Sen. Wright claimed this deal was linked to a border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia, as well as a failed acquisition affecting relations between Thaksin and Hun Sen. The fallout allegedly led to a recorded conversation leak and subsequent removal of former PM Paetongtarn Shinawatra from office.

Mauerberger denied all accusations, asserting his income is legitimate. He appointed Thanadon Suwannarit, an adviser to Thamanat Prompow, as his lawyer and filed a defamation suit against Rangsiman, seeking 100 million baht in damages. In response, the DSI verified that Mauerberger has no criminal record and has not been the subject of any complaints.

As the case awaits a court decision, Rangsiman and Wiroj continue to pressure Thailand's current Prime Minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, to combat call centre scams. Mauerberger is also reportedly applying for Thai citizenship.

Key Takeaways

  • DSI confirms no legal violations for Mauerberger.

Having connection with Prompow immediately clears him of any funny business.
