Chiang Mai police have conducted a full-scale robbery response drill at a local gold shop to reassure the public amid rising gold prices. The exercise, held on 15 October 2025, was designed to enhance officer readiness and strengthen security measures for both business owners and residents in the province.

The operation followed directives from Pol. Lt. Gen. Kritthaphon Yisakhon, Commissioner of Provincial Police Region 5, along with Pol. Maj. Gen. Noppadol Krungklai, Deputy Commissioner and Pol. Maj. Gen. Yutthana Kaenchan, Commander of Chiang Mai Provincial Police. Concerned about the continuing surge in gold prices and its potential to attract criminal activity, senior police officials instructed all local stations to rehearse emergency response plans. The aim was to ensure every officer could act swiftly and effectively in the event of a real robbery.

At Mueang Chiang Mai Police Station, the exercise was led by Pol. Col. Pratchaya Thithla, Superintendent, supported by Pol. Lt. Col. Thattawi Danpitaktrakun, Deputy Superintendent of Operations, Pol. Lt. Col. Chuwaphon Chaisan, Deputy Superintendent of Investigation, and other senior officers. The drill simulated an armed robbery at the Yaowarat Omthong gold shop inside Tesco Lotus Chiang Mai–Hang Dong branch, where a suspect stole three one-baht gold necklaces. Officers practised pursuit, containment and arrest procedures under realistic conditions.

The gold shop and Tesco Lotus management also participated in the exercise, reviewing security protocols and communication channels. Police advised gold shop operators to maintain full CCTV coverage, install alarm systems connected to police stations and remain alert for suspicious behaviour. Businesses were also urged to secure entrances with metal bars and reinforced locks, and to ensure rapid contact with local police in emergencies.

The training concluded successfully, with full cooperation from all participants and no disruptions reported. Police emphasised that these drills will continue periodically to ensure preparedness and public confidence.

This has all the elements of a farce.

Jonathan Wild, "Honest" Jack Sheppard, Charles Hitchen, et al  would be laughing in their graves if they knew this.

Plus ça change...

Or is it just a rehearsal for when they do ?
