Trump, Zelensky meeting: main points to End War

President Donald Trump hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House on Friday, signaling a renewed U.S. push to end Russia’s three-year war in Ukraine. Buoyed by a recent Middle East ceasefire, Trump projected confidence that peace in Europe was within reach.

“I’m the mediator president, and I’m mediating a not easy situation,” Trump said, while insisting “it should be easy.”

The meeting—held as a working lunch before the press—was notably calm compared to a heated February Oval Office session that reportedly devolved into shouting between Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, and Zelensky.

This time, Trump struck a more measured tone toward Moscow. After weeks of hinting that Ukraine could retake all Russian-held territory, he softened his stance, praising both sides for their ongoing talks: “I think they’re both doing a great job. We have to get it done.”

Trump appeared to walk back his earlier suggestion that the U.S. might supply Ukraine with long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles, warning that such weapons were “very powerful” and difficult to provide. “Hopefully, we’ll be able to get the war over with without thinking about Tomahawks,” he said.

Zelensky countered that Kyiv would not rely solely on Western missiles, floating a potential technology exchange where Ukraine could send “thousands” of domestically produced drones to the U.S. in return for advanced American munitions. “That’s where we can work together, where we can strengthen American production,” Zelensky said.

The renewed dialogue marks one of Trump’s most public forays into Ukraine diplomacy since returning to office, though both leaders face pressure—Trump from skeptical lawmakers wary of deepening U.S. involvement, and Zelensky from a war-weary Ukrainian public seeking tangible progress.

Key Takeaways:

  • Trump and Zelensky met at the White House to discuss ending Russia’s war in Ukraine.

  • Trump moderated his tone toward Moscow and cooled talk of supplying Tomahawk missiles.

  • Zelensky proposed a drone-for-missile swap, highlighting Ukraine’s growing weapons industry.
