Putin Faces Airspace Hurdles for Possible Trump Meeting in Budapest

An IL-96 of the type that Putin might use

If Russian President Vladimir Putin travels to Budapest for a potential summit with U.S. President Donald Trump, his “Flying Kremlin” aircraft will need to cross a diplomatic minefield before even leaving Moscow.

While the meeting is not yet confirmed, Hungary’s Viktor Orban has already promised to “ensure that [Putin] can enter Hungary, hold successful talks here, and then return home.” But with Russian planes banned from both EU and NATO airspace since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, getting Putin’s Ilyushin Il-96 to Budapest will require special exemptions.

The European Commission says member states can individually grant derogations for overflights if they serve the cause of peace, and NATO has deferred the issue to national authorities. Given Trump’s involvement, some EU countries may be more flexible.

Still, the logistics are daunting. Hungary is landlocked and surrounded by NATO members. Putin cannot fly over Ukraine or Poland, leaving only narrow corridors through the Black Sea and Turkey, possibly transiting Bulgaria, Romania, or Serbia. Each route would require explicit clearance from EU states and likely military escort.

Serbia, a longtime Russian partner and EU candidate, remains the likeliest facilitator. President Aleksandar Vucic has close ties to Putin, and Serbia’s flag carrier continues to fly directly to Moscow through EU skies. Yet even Serbia’s route depends on cooperation from Bulgaria or Romania—both building major NATO bases on the alliance’s eastern flank.

Putin’s last trip to EU territory was years ago, and his status as an indicted war criminal by the International Criminal Court further complicates travel logistics. Hungary, which is preparing to exit the ICC, insists that won’t be a problem.

For Orban, hosting Trump and Putin would be a political coup ahead of next spring’s elections. For Brussels, it’s a diplomatic headache: a summit held inside the EU but beyond its control.

Key Takeaways:

  • Putin would need EU airspace exemptions to fly his Il-96 to Hungary for a Trump summit.

  • Possible flight paths include Turkey, Bulgaria or Romania, and Serbia—but all require national approval.

  • Hungary, friendly to both Moscow and Trump, is pushing to host despite ICC and EU complications.

There must be buses running that route.

So what is the EU or NATO gonna do? Shooting them out of the sky, like Russia did already with the Malaysian aircraft?

I doubt it

Putin will never take that risk, not even with a double from him.

His plane costs too much if it were forced to land.

Perfect.....What's the fuss?

In a shift, White House says no plan for Trump-Putin summit

The White House has halted its work on a second summit between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, U.S. officials said.

Why it matters: The change of plans is an acknowledgment by the White House that the gulf between Russia and Ukraine is too wide to reach a deal to end the war.

  • "There are no plans for President Trump to meet with President Putin in the immediate future," a White House official said.

...

Driving the news: Trump said last week that he would meet with Putin in Budapest within two weeks.

  • A day later Trump held a tense meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and made clear he wants both Russia and Ukraine to stop the war.
  • U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio was also expected to meet within days with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, ahead of the leaders summit.
  • A phone call between Rubio and Lavrov on Monday ended with no agreement on a meeting or progress toward a summit between Putin and Trump.

All this shows that the absurd sanctions against Russia that Europe foolishly applies and that is mainly harming european populations, is a total failure at one point. Those who are dancing in joy and calling for more Russian sanctions are strangely very quiet for another situation far worse elsewhere. Hint : it's a bit in the Middle East area.
