Trump Ends Payments to Colombia Amid Heated Exchange

US President Donald Trump announced the cessation of all payments and subsidies to Colombia, intensifying tensions between him and Colombia's President Gustavo Petro. Trump accused Petro of failing to combat drug production in Colombia despite receiving substantial US financial aid. He declared on social media that these payments would stop immediately.

The clash follows ongoing disputes over migration and drug trafficking, issues that have strained relations between the two countries. The US provided approximately 7.56 billion Thai baht ($210 million) to Colombia this fiscal year, with a significant portion allocated to agriculture. Trump's announcement could impact Colombia, long considered a key US ally in South America.

Responses from both nations reveal a deepening rift. Trump criticised Petro, calling him an "illegal drug leader" and threatened US intervention in drug-producing areas. Conversely, Petro argued that Trump's approach lacked understanding, referencing Colombian literature and socialism as defences against these accusations.

The escalation occurs amid US military action in the Caribbean targeting illegal drug trafficking. US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed a recent strike on a suspected narcotics-laden boat tied to Colombian terrorism, escalating military involvement. Petro's response did not address US funding changes but criticised Trump's rhetoric and policy.

Both leaders have a history of conflict, with Petro's visa revoked last month after he condemned US military actions. As diplomatic ties deteriorate, the future of US-Colombian relations remains uncertain, particularly given the wider geopolitical implications.

Key Takeaways:

  • Trump halted all US payments to Colombia over drug production concerns.
  • Recent military actions in the Caribbean underline tensions.
  • US-Colombian relations face increased strain amid these developments.

I dono it may be his dementia or his frustration of not getting the Nobel so he  acting out + the distraction factor.he says it’s to indirect drugs that’s a possibility as well + the raw red meat for his base about blowing small boats out of the water without warning.

Trump, the impulsive demagogue cutting ties with Colombia is China gain. Colombia strengthened ties with China by joining BRICS and the BRI initaitives. USA key allies in Latin America like Colomobia, Mexico and Brazil are moving closer to China because of Trump chaotic catastrophic presidency.

Colombia's main exports to the U.S. are mineral fuels, oils, and distillation products, which includes crude oil and other significant exports including cut flowers, precious metals and stones, and coffee.

So will we see a Trump 1,000% tariff against Columbia imports?

I wonder if China has a spare $200 million in the sofa cushions to fill the gap?

Would make a most excellent PLA training base, or perhaps.....

This weekend, Gustavo Petro, the President of Colombia, introduced the proposal to construct an interoceanic canal in the Choco region of Colombia, via railroad. The envisioned canal aims to connect the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, positioning it as a competitor to the Panama Canal.

Railway link?  How BRI!  But that'll never be able to compete with the American Canal!

Those two products, if exported from Columbia, would be destined for Europe and Wakanda.

Fentanyl would be sourced from Canada and Mexico.
