Tensions have escalated between Thailand and Cambodia as Thailand’s Defence Minister, General Nattapol Nakphanit, issued an ultimatum regarding ongoing border negotiations. Speaking on October 21 at Government House, General Nattapol warned that the upcoming Thai-Cambodian General Border Committee (GBC) meeting would be the last if progress isn’t made, affecting the ASEAN Summit and future peace deals.

The GBC meeting in Malaysia follows the collapse of previous discussions at the Thailand-Cambodia Regional Border Commission (RBC) in September. Logistical reasons prompted the combination of the GBC meeting with the ASEAN Summit and other diplomatic talks. The discussions will focus on four unresolved issues from the previous GBC meeting that remain crucial for resolving the border tensions.

General Nattapol stressed the importance of reaching a peaceful resolution, stating, "We won’t be taken advantage of. It’s time to set a clear timeline.” Failure to cooperate from Cambodia could significantly impact the ASEAN Summit, but the general reiterated Thailand's commitment to acting within international law.

Concerns over disputed areas such as Ban Nong Chan and Ban Nong Ya Kaeo in Sa Kaeo province, which Thailand claims are unclaimed but encroached upon, were highlighted. General Nattapol asserted these areas are Thai territories and demanded immediate actions to return this land to Thailand.

In case of negotiation failures, General Nattapol mentioned that the Actual Control Line might become Thailand’s agreed fallback position. He urged Cambodia to cooperate by developing a relocation plan for people living in these disputed areas, warning that failure to do so would jeopardize the ASEAN Summit and any future peace treaties.

Key Takeaways

  • Thailand's Defence Minister issues an ultimatum to Cambodia on border talks.
