The FBI has blown the whistle on one of the biggest sports scandals in years — and two NBA names are suddenly playing defense off the court. Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier and Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups were among 34 people arrested in a sweeping illegal gambling and mob poker sting that sounds more like a Hollywood heist than a basketball headline.

Federal agents say the schemes — cheekily dubbed Operation Nothing But Bet — involved players allegedly faking injuries to cash in on rigged wagers, while mobsters and ex-athletes fixed poker games with high-tech cheating gear, from X-ray tables to contact-lens card readers.

Authorities claim millions were laundered through crypto and wire transfers, and that violence, extortion, and even a robbery added muscle to the operation. The underworld link? The Bonanno, Genovese, and Gambino crime families — yes, those guys — who apparently couldn’t resist getting a piece of the sports-betting pie.

Rozier is accused of tipping off pals about a planned “injury” while with Charlotte, letting them place surefire bets. Billups, fresh off a Hall of Fame nod, allegedly found himself at the center of the mob-poker circus.

The NBA says both are benched indefinitely, promising to “protect the integrity of the game.” For now, though, it’s not about rebounds and assists — it’s about indictments and arraignments.

Sweeping crackdown on illegal sports betting and organized crime, resulting in 34 arrests, including NBA player Terry Rozier of the Miami Heat and Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups. The FBI said the operation uncovered two intertwined schemes involving fraud, match-fixing, and illegal poker games connected to several New York crime families.

The first case, dubbed Operation Nothing But Bet, accuses several professional athletes of using insider information to manipulate wagers on major betting platforms. Investigators allege that some players faked injuries or altered game performance to cash in on fraudulent bets worth tens of thousands of dollars.

In the second case, authorities allege that members of the Bonanno, Genovese, and Gambino crime families conspired with athletes to run rigged high-stakes poker games across cities including New York, Las Vegas, Miami, and the Hamptons. The group reportedly used high-tech cheating tools—such as contact lenses, marked cards, and even X-ray poker tables—to defraud wealthy victims.

Officials say the combined operations generated tens of millions of dollars in illegal profits laundered through cryptocurrency and bank transfers. Violence, extortion, and robbery were also part of the scheme.

Key Takeaways

  • FBI arrests 34 in dual scandals linking NBA figures and New York’s mob.

  • Players allegedly faked injuries and rigged poker games for cash.

  • Billups and Rozier suspended as the NBA scrambles to save face.

Billups, the leader of a good team that reached unexpected heights and beat the much favoured Lakers. I really enjoyed their defense, no-one was entering the bucket.

Unfortunately, inevitable with these real-time betting apps coming into play.  A major problem for the NBA to maintain the integrity of the sport.
