More than 350 women at the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) in Mandaluyong received free dental care on October 26, thanks to a collaborative initiative by Mencius Lodge No. 93, the Manila Health Department Dentists Association, and the Kababaihan Organization. The outreach offered services such as oral prophylaxis, tooth fillings, extractions, and dentures, marking the first comprehensive dental mission at CIW in several years. Fifteen volunteer dentists participated in the event, providing much-needed care.

The mission was a significant event for CIW, as dental services had been limited. Atty. Margarita Gutierrez, Department of Justice Undersecretary and a Kababaihan supporter, emphasized the importance of the initiative, noting it's the first time in many years such extensive services were available. Complementary oral hygiene kits, donated by Lamoiyan Corporation, were distributed as part of the effort.

Dr. Joan Carbonell from the Manila Health Department Dentists Association highlighted the significance of this outreach, as correctional facilities often lack prioritized dental care. The flexibility and responsiveness of volunteer dentists played a crucial role in bridging this gap, reflecting a commitment to serve these institutions.

Dental Officer Christine Cenal acknowledged the mission’s impact, pointing out that previously only tooth extractions were feasible at the facility. This comprehensive approach, therefore, represented a substantial improvement in the health services available to inmates. The initiative demonstrated how collaboration can enhance the quality of life even within correctional settings.

Mencius Lodge Worshipful Master Neil Makasiar underscored the importance of providing dental care, linking it to restoring confidence and improving quality of life. The willingness of the Masons to support similar future initiatives reinforces their dedication to community service.

At the mission's conclusion, expressions of gratitude were extended to all involved parties. Gutierrez remarked that the care provided is integral to restoring dignity and hope, which aligns with the broader goals of justice and rehabilitation.
