Israel has been thrown into political and moral turmoil after its top military lawyer, Maj. Gen. Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi, abruptly resigned, vanished, was found alive on a Tel Aviv beach — and then jailed amid a firestorm over a leaked video showing soldiers sexually abusing a Palestinian detainee.

The 53-year-old, long respected for her integrity, admitted to authorizing the leak of the surveillance footage to expose “unacceptable brutality” at Sde Teiman prison, where Israeli soldiers allegedly sodomized a detainee with a knife. But her decision enraged Israel’s right-wing establishment, with allies of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accusing her of treason and staging her disappearance to destroy evidence.

After being found Sunday night, Tomer-Yerushalmi was taken into custody and charged with fraud, breach of trust, and obstruction of justice. She is being held in a women’s prison as investigators probe whether she deliberately undermined the case. Former chief military prosecutor Col. Matan Solomesh has also been arrested.

The scandal has exposed Israel’s deep internal rifts — between those demanding accountability for alleged war crimes and those who see such investigations as betrayal during wartime. Critics say the outrage over the leak is distracting from the real horror: soldiers accused of torturing a Palestinian prisoner so brutally he required surgery for life-threatening injuries before being sent back to Gaza.

In her resignation letter, Tomer-Yerushalmi warned that Israel’s “basic understanding — that there are actions which must never be taken even against the vilest of detainees — no longer convinces everyone.”

Analysts say her downfall symbolizes a state consumed by division and moral decay, echoing the toxic political climate that preceded the 1995 assassination of Yitzhak Rabin.

Key Takeaways:

  • Maj. Gen. Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi leaked video of soldiers abusing a Palestinian prisoner.

  • She resigned, went missing, was found, and jailed on corruption charges.

  • The scandal exposes Israel’s deep divisions and fury over military accountability.
