Who's Using Second Life? Fun? What Do You Think?

Featured Replies

Second Life..have you heard about it? If so, what do you think? Good for advertisers in this new world? Interesting virtual-interaction for users?

I just came across it today….and it’s a bit strange indeed.

I posted a similar thread a few months back but there wasn't much interest in second life at the time. I discovered that TV is mostly comprised of grumpy geriatrics who live un fear of new technology and youngsters playing noisy rock'n'roll music.

BTW, I was initially enthuasiastic about SL but the novelty quickly wore off for me. At 37 I am too old to learn new things.

Been around for a while - in Holland you can shop for your groceries in a virtual seconds life Hema (supermarket chain) and get them delivered to your doorstep - pretty neat I thought. I downloaded the GUI but wasn't too impressed with the clunky Java-ness on Windows. Great concept though.

I got SeondLife late last year.

Had it running for a few months, logged in almost daily.

I became a paying member, bought some land, built a cabin, got a car and motorcycle.

Had a plane for a while but I crashed it into the sea one day and never was able to get it out again. But that was OK because I could just respawn it when I wanted to but it crashed all the time anyway.

TV may be full of grumpy gerries, but SL is full of twitty teens I think. A lot of pompous and arrogant twits in there for sure.

I had fun, was thinking from a commercial point of view when I began, thinking along lines of advertising and extending my current web business into the SL world.

No real reason I stopped using it, I guess I got bored with my exploding head routine and the silly Dr Suess "cat in the hat" hat I wore.

I think it is a pre-runner to where we may be in the future but really it is a bit rough just now, not so smooth, not easy enough for newbies.

But there is lots of stuff in there, cities, companies, big commercial outfits, quite interesting but at this point I'd say not so educatonal or helfpul in real life.

There are people making money in there, but they are serious computer nerds who almost live full time at their terminals and are all white, pale and geeky looking in the real world, even if they DO dress up a'la The Matrix.

And yes, the other poster is right, there is an excellent spoof of SL at the GetaFirstLife site.

SL is the way it will be, in the future, in a dozen or more years from now.

For now it is a fun distraction.

Ah..you're still young!

Anyhow, I am really interested in how companies can advertise in this virtual world...Not only is it additional revenue for the site but also brands that users relate to which makes part of the overall experience...

Such online worlds however need to be more user friendly....
