Severe Tropical Storm Fung-Wong, named "Uwan" by PAGASA, is forecast to intensify into a super typhoon as it approaches northern Luzon. Signal No. 1 has been raised over parts of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Uwan is packing maximum sustained winds of 110 kph and is moving westward at 25 kph, with landfall expected over southern Isabela or northern Aurora early next week.

The storm was last located 1,175 kilometers east of Eastern Visayas and is expected to enter the Philippine area of responsibility by late Friday or early Saturday. PAGASA has forecast the storm to enter the typhoon category within 24 hours and strengthen to a super typhoon by tomorrow evening or Sunday morning. Signal No. 5 could be issued during its passage.

PAGASA warned of a high risk of life-threatening storm surges and coastal flooding in Northern Luzon and the east coast of Central and Southern Luzon. Such warnings might be issued as early as Friday night. Under Signal No. 1, minimal to minor wind impacts are expected within 36 hours in specified areas across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

Uwan is anticipated to traverse the mountainous terrain of northern Luzon and emerge weakened over the West Philippine Sea by Monday. Despite its passage over land, PAGASA expects the storm to maintain its typhoon strength.

Key Takeaways

  • Tropical Storm Uwan may reach super typhoon status this weekend.
  • PAGASA warns of potential life-threatening storm surges.
  • Landfall and significant weather impacts are expected in northern Luzon early next week.

My wife’s family Filipino home of 70+ years flooded for the first time ever last weekend. The weather seems to be getting more and more unpredictable and I hope that this time the Philippines doesn’t experience as much devastation.

Isn't it really late for these storms?

On the other side of the world and not too present in western news was record breaking hurricane Melissa.

Breathtaking devastation like a war zone.
