Travel Chaos Hits US Airports as Govt Shutdown Grounds Flights

Travellers across the United States are enduring massive disruptions, with over 2,000 flights cancelled or delayed on Friday. An ongoing federal government shutdown heavily impacts the nation's air traffic control system, causing the turmoil. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has directed airlines to slash air traffic to relieve pressure on air traffic controllers, many of whom are working without pay or seeking temporary work elsewhere.

Major airports, including New York, Atlanta, Chicago, and Los Angeles, are among the hardest hit, with domestic flights severely affected. Approximately 40 of the country's busiest airports are experiencing cancellations and delays. The FAA announced initial reductions would cut about 4% of domestic flights, with expectations that this number will rise to 10% by the end of next week. Officials have warned that up to 4,000 flights per day could face disruption should the shutdown persist.

In response, airlines are striving to assist stranded passengers. United Airlines and Delta Air Lines have assured customers with cancelled flights that they can receive full refunds or rebook without extra charges. Transportation analysts have warned that the cascading delays may worsen as the busy holiday travel season approaches if the government remains closed. An industry expert noted the unprecedented strain on the aviation system, stating, “The longer it continues, the harder it will be to recover.”

Passengers are advised to verify their flight status prior to leaving for the airport and to brace for lengthy waits at terminals across the country. The shutdown's impact is anticipated to escalate, posing significant challenges for both air traffic operations and the travelling public.

Key Takeaways

  • Over 2,000 flights were disrupted on Friday due to the federal shutdown.
  • Major airports like New York and Los Angeles are significantly affected.
  • Airlines are offering refunds or free rebookings for cancelled flights.

Do the Democrats have any agency for voting against the CR?

Bunch of narcissistic selfish politicians.

Disgusting.

This is one more example of Trump's extortionate attempt to make the pain too great. Saw Air Traffic controller spokesperson saying the shortage is similar to snow... artificial solution from former Fox host (Duffy) that needs not take place.

If Trump can pull 20 billion out of a hat for Argentina buddy, he could find the pay for essential workers too.

"Hmm... trying to deprive millions of food hasn't worked.... how about hitting middle class with flight cancellations just before Thanksgiving?"

SNAP is included with the CR.   The created the subsides and these expire at the end of the year.  This has nothing to with saving the ACA.

555 Holding the Executive Branch by trump's election (R), holding the majority in the US House of Representatives (R) and the majority in the Senate (R). Thus controlling the Eecutive and Legislative branches and holding a majority in the Supreme Court and so ... wait, what? It is the minority's fault that a budget bill funding the government is the fault of the minority?

Correct, I do. I do also hold both parties responsible for "kicking the can down the road" repeatedly rather than having to seriously deal with the highest medical costs in the world which is a big part of the income/wealth gap being faced by the working middle class. IMHO, the underlying issue resulting in Americans chewing on each other. The current economic system is unsustainable ... well, if you are relying on their belief and support to sustain a participatory democracy.

It takes 60 votes to move a bill out of the Senate.

Does someone again have to post the link to the interview some years ago when Trump unequivocally said that the sitting president owns every shut-down?😄

Your post does not address the requirement of 60 votes to advance a bill in the Senate. It adds nothing to the political discussion.

Then why o why have the republicans not made a better system during all years bitching about it. It's easy to say something is a failure without coming up with a plan. So please go back to your cave and hibernate some more. Mr. Non Fact

Why is it always the Republicans job to fix the mess of the Democrats.   The Democrats won’t even deal the Social Security short fall.

It is no coincidence that the 2 longest shutdowns in US history are both under Trump.

It isn't that there haven't been other conservative presidents who had to deal with this in the past.
