US Shutdown Nears End as Senate Reaches Bipartisan Deal

In a breakthrough move, Senate Democrats and Republicans have reached a deal to extend government funding, signalling a possible end to the longest shutdown in US history. At least eight Senate Democratic centrists have aligned with GOP leaders and the White House, crafting a plan set for a pivotal Sunday night vote. The agreement aims to temporarily reopen the government while preparing a larger funding package that includes several key agencies.

The compromise lacks a firm Republican commitment to extend the Affordable Care Act subsidies, a major contention point. Despite this, Democrats believe a future negotiation on the subsidies is possible, though the outcome in the Senate or House remains uncertain. The deal sees support from influential Democrats like Senator Tim Kaine, who represents many affected federal workers and backs the GOP’s assurance for a subsidy vote.

Senators Jeanne Shaheen, Angus King, Maggie Hassan, alongside Senate Majority Leader John Thune, have played crucial roles in brokering the deal. An important concession includes the White House’s agreement to reverse shutdown-related federal worker firings and ensure no similar actions this fiscal year. Workers are also guaranteed pay for the shutdown period, a significant relief for many.

However, not all Democrats are on board. Liberal factions and several centrist Democrats express concerns, with Senator Richard Blumenthal stating the absence of healthcare provisions makes the deal unacceptable. House Democrats, led by Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, criticise the failure to extend the Affordable Care Act tax credits, planning a strategy meeting on Monday to address these issues.

The broader legislative package includes appropriations for military construction, veterans’ affairs, and other key sectors. Enhanced security funding for Congress, alongside significant support for US Capitol Police, forms part of the proposed measures. The Senate’s planned amendments to the House-passed stopgap bill must pass to proceed, requiring bipartisan support.

If the Senate succeeds, the revised bill would return to the House for final approval before reaching President Donald Trump’s desk. The outcome remains uncertain due to narrow voting margins and opposition from Speaker Mike Johnson and Jeffries in the House. Senator John Fetterman urges bipartisan cooperation, highlighting the importance of progressing with the vote to potentially resolve healthcare cost concerns in the future.

Key Takeaways

  • A bipartisan deal aims to end the US government shutdown, pending a Sunday vote.
  • The agreement includes temporary funding and a potential future healthcare subsidy vote.
  • Democratic support varies, with significant opposition in the House over healthcare concerns.

Then tell them to tell their Dem congressmen to end the shutdown.

The other issues can be negotiated later, assuming they are willing and able and not just being pig headed.

Remember who they are dealing with, they are going to get the republicans on record trying to kill healthcare then come next year when this temp bill is over the democrats will bring it up again holding up the republican vote.personally I’d have let old Donnie stew longer.
